Teams & Riders Everybody needs a little bit of Roglstomp in their lives

I first heard about the whistles a few years ago on one of Lance's podcasts when he went on one of his trademarked Contador rants... about Contador's pink whistle.

But sure, it's sketchy as hell (remember the Froome incident with the French policeman? i.e. "F*ck you!"). In that video I shared we can even hear Rog saying "maybe I'll walk".
I was flabbergasted . . . I knew they often had to ride down from summit finishes because the team buses wouldn’t fit on top. But somehow I had imagined the road was still closed off they way we see it when they are climbing up during the race.

Thinking about other sports, it’s hard to imagine the superstars having to do anything so dangerous and vulnerable after they’ve finished their events/races. I think it shows pro cyclists are a different breed, because they are also cyclists, and like all of us who get used to dangers and inconveniences in a daily basis.

Okay, it's not that dangerous.

You’re right it’s not—it wasjust so surprising because at 1st I didn’t understand what all the whistling was about—and then I recognized some of the riders and realized what the deal was. It’s not really dangerous at all compared to a stage sprint finish with thepeloton going 40+ kph while riders are inches away from each other.

He certainly appears to be the strongest in the 1st week. And odds are starting to reflect that. Today, he became bookies favourite for the first time since Jonas announced his attendance…

TT will show more. If he can limit his losses to Remco to a reasonable amount (anything less than 40 seconds would be a success IMO) and keep Vinge in check, he has a chance to pull it off. If Vinge on the other hand shows the world who he is once again (and beats Remco while doing that), he is ****** as Vingegaard IMO is able to hold any advantage he gains over Remco in TT over the last two weeks. At least TJV will see it that way. I doubt that will happen, though…

I don't think Vingegaard can do that in this shape.

Normally, I agree with you (I kinda liked Remco’s interview😁). However - looking back at TDF, I would never have imagined Jonas to beat Pog given his recent performance against him on the climbs. He looked weaker compared to Pog than he does now compared to Rog IMO. Trend was going Pog’s way. Maybe (just maybe) last mountain stage before TT (the one where Yates got away) we got a hunch he‘s on an upward trajectory. But noone in this god’s green Earth knew what was to come. On that TT, I wowed never to underestimate the guy again. And I’m not going to. Normally, I would expect Rogla to be better on Tuesday. It makes all the sense in the world. Jonas was beatable in his Dauphine form and this form he’s got right now - I don’t think he’s on that level. Still, I will try not to get shell-shocked twice in a span of a couple of months by the guy‘s TT performance.

Too bad they didn't race to the finish line today. He would probably gain a few seconds, in my opinion he's the strongest in the mountains.
It's impossible to know who is really the strongest in the mountains. What happened today, was just the "explosiveness" in the last km. We know he is superior in the last km of a steep climb.
The stages with multiple and long climbs will decide the race, and we didn't yet see a stage like that.

After first week one could say that a couple of seconds where lost. Due to TTT and the crash. Still the GC position remains really good and looking forward to week two. Could be the decisive week, considering the stages involved. For ITT i feel that Rogla will do good and i don't believe this ITT will decide the overall. The ITT is not pancake flat and it's a bit technical at times. Fingers crossed for tomorrow and week two as a whole. To again be in good position, starting the week three!

And yet Mäder's own reaction at the time was basically "I should have gone faster." Seems fair to let him have the final word.
However, I'm not sure which situation with Evenepoel in this Vuelta was similar to that...
Here’s LR’s take on that:

Of course, given Mader’s tragic death, it would have been nice in retrospect if Roglic had gifted him that stage, but it’s a bit odd to criticize a man for going for the win. I could be wrong, but I don’t think Remco or Pogi would have let Mäder win that. They’re killers.

There’s drama all the time in GT stages about whether or not the peloton will catch the break. They are often swallowed up right at the end. I never see people arguing that the peloton should knock it off and let the poor riders in the break have the win.
It is the funniest of all complaints people seem to have about Rogla. Gifting a stage win to a rider from another team, how ridiculous...
