Teams & Riders Everybody needs a little bit of Roglstomp in their lives

Beautiful win on stage 8. First real gig they did with Dani and it delivered, perfect lead out and positioning at the beginning of the climb on the steep and narrow section. Rogla apparently with a new tool in the toolbox, interval driven mid ranger while preserving the stomp, astonishing blend.

It's going to be carnage tomorrow, all teams all in.

He's just a class too high for the rest of the field. I don't believe Mas can take on Roglic in this kind of shape. I thought he might have a chance in 2021 and he didn't get close. So far I have seen nothing to suggest this year will go differently. Like, I don't think Roglic's level is incredibly high and he isn't always rock solid throughout GTs but there is just no competitor in this race who seems up to the task of beating him. Guys like Mas and Landa are the riders who can challenge him from day to day and who look good next to him on a podium but they not the kind of riders to beat him over 3 weeks.

The thing about Landa and Mas is, that they are really not great at ITT. Primosz will take about 30sec from them on the last day. So that gives me quite some confidence. Thats why I was worried about Almeida but he is gone now. Tiberi is someone to watch, though. All in all: Just take back the time from Oconnor and the title is yours champ.

It's 2024 and we're still acting as if Roglic' edge on the non mutants is anaerobic ability and explosiveness.
Well, it kinda is. That and his TT. I very much doubt he'stronger than Landa and Mas in the high mountains, i.e today and the 5 hard MTFs. But he just needs not to get drop and he will win by 2 minutes to Mas and 3-4 to Landa with bonus, small splits towards the end and TT

Why would they be stronger than Rog in the high mountains? The last high mountain stage they competed (TDF stage 4 to Galibier - i think that should qualify as high mountain) Roglic put 20 seconds into Landa and 3,5 minutes into Mas. Yes, this is the Vuelta, so Mas might be a bit stronger, but I don't think there's a lot of difference between them.

We have to be happy with how it ended. Primož is a real fighter. I just hope he doesn't get sick...

It could be his traditional bad first Sunday, a bit like Formigal 4 years ago.

I mean if that was his 'bad day', then he saved it well. Nice to see Lipowitz strong enough to stay with the red jersey group as well.

Also, the finale today clearly wasn't 'ideal' for an attack on the last climb because chasers could close it down (as happened to Mas), so even with great legs the profile wouldn't have been good.

Well said. The only survivors off the front were those given a massive lead. Roglic and Mas even together would not have that opportunity without much company and little gap achieved. It was ideal to make everyone else work to the max and not lose meaningful time.

These long, hard, hot stages can be unpredictable, there was no guarantee he would be better today and the final descent was not ideal to stay away either as showcased by Mas.

Some quick napkin math, he is 3:53 down, there are approx 6 MTF left and a few no-risk-no-glory type stages, final TT is twice as long as prologue and he got 35s on O'Connor there so could realistically gain a minute.

I think it's certainly doable but it's wide open and he'll have to fight it out 100% unless O'Connor cracks completely, not even counting some more riders doing these long range breakaway attacks and mixing it up.

Interesting times ahead, it won't be boring.
