Teams & Riders Everybody needs a little bit of Roglstomp in their lives

I think he burnt enough to try to get back to Pidcock and before that to minimize losses on a bike that wasn't working. He looked pretty comfortable before he crashed. He looked much worse to me in Troyes, and he didn't crash then.

With Del Toro, I'm sure he's a talent, but I think if UAE had training data indicating he was better than Ayuso I'd presume he would have been higher in the pecking order in races before now. So when UAE say Yates and Ayuso are the leaders before the race, I'm inclined to believe them. And this super greedy keep everyone in GC and get all the placings in stages is something they do even when Pogacar is racing.

Vingegaard was a reserve for the 2021 Tour.
He wasn't going to go; he came in at the last minute because of Dumoulin's injury.

Visma didn't have Vingegaard's training numbers?

For the 2023 Vuelta, they said the leaders were Vingegaard and Roglic.
Carapaz was Landa's domestique in the 2019 Giro.
I don't think Del Toro will win, but I wouldn't rule it out because he didn't come to the Giro as a leader.

I never saw Roglic comfortable on the gravel sections.

No.

Dumoulin had a mental breakdown early 2021 at Jumbo training camp and took a break from cycling. Vingegaard was scheduled for the Tour early that season, especially after Itzulia where he played a key role in Rog's overall win by sitting on Pog's wheel during the long chase.

Vinge was Jumbo's "secret weapon" in that 2021 Tour.

So why did Jumbo put out a statement on its website saying that its Vingegaard reserve would go to the TDF?

Actually, you've sort of lost me here. Dumoulin had a total meltdown early 2021. Everyone knows it. He pretty much put an end to his TdF place right then.

Vingegaard wasn't some sort of last minute thing. Jumbo had prepared their coup and without Colbrelli going full world wrestling champ on Rogla on stage 3 it might have worked out better than a second place finish (for either Vinge or Rog).

Roglic can't cover every attack.
He has to decide which wheel to watch, and I think it will be Ayuso's.

If Ayuso sees that Del Toro can win the Giro, he'll be the first to get nervous.
Roglic has to get on Ayuso's wheel and finish him off, and hope that Del Toro doesn't become Carapaz in 2019 and lose time in the mountains.

If Rogic goes on every attack, he'll be like Pogacar on the Granon, who only had to follow Vingegaard's wheel. Vingegaard looked stronger than Roglic in the Dauphiné, and Roglic had a crash that weakened him.

Perhaps Del Toro will end up being stronger than Ayuso in the mountains, but Roglic can't go on every attack, or he'll collapse.
He has to choose his opponent correctly. And hope that Ayuso will be the first to get nervous. It will be difficult for him to accept that Del Toro wins a GT before him. Roglic has to play on Ayuso's nervousness. Yesterday Ayuso was very anxious.

Couldn't agree more. Ayuso is 100% going to mess this up for UAE

Timeline:

2020 Oct 28 (before stage 8 of the Vuelta):
“Both our coaching staff and I think it is the best choice to get off the bike,” Dumoulin confirmed Wednesday morning. “At the start of the Vuelta, I already felt tired and that feeling remained. It makes no sense for me to continue because then I might put a strain on next season. It is not desirable to leave the Vuelta, but this is the right choice. We can all agree on that.”

2021 Jan 18:
The official announcement has yet to be made but Jumbo-Visma look set to send Primož Roglič, Tom Dumoulin, and Steven Kruijswijk to the Tour de France this year.

According to a report on Wielerflits, the Dutch squad will send an almost identical team to the one that raced the Tour in 2020, with just two alterations. Kruijswijk will head to the Tour after missing out last year through injury, while Mike Teunissen also makes the eight-rider roster.

2021 Jan 23:
“I took the decision yesterday. And the team supports me in it, and it feels really good. It is really as if a backpack of a hundred kilos has slipped off my shoulders. I immediately woke up happy. It feels so good that I finally took the decision to take some time for myself. That tells everything.”

2021 Feb 22:
In an interview with cycling website Wielerflits, Jumbo-Visma coach Grischa Niermann said: “We now assume that Tom will not participate in the Tour. He needs time and he gets that time. The route to the Tour has already started, but the specific preparation for the Tour de France will start for us at the beginning of May. If Tom returns to training before the time and reaches a good level, he is so talented that through that preparation he can be at the start of the Tour in top form. It wouldn't be fair to exclude him from that. ”

2021 Apr 26:
As Tom Dumoulin is having a break from cycling, one more place still had to be filled.
[...]
“We took Jonas into the team in 2019 because we saw that he is really talented”, sports director Grischa Niermann says. “He showed that straight away. Last year he rode a really strong Vuelta in support of Primoz. He also showed for the first time that he can play a crucial role in the high mountains, in the Alps and the Pyrenees. We believe he will play a really important role in the Tour. His selection is a reward for his good results. In theory, Jonas can be a grand tour contender himself. He also has a good time trial. But he needs time for his development. In that regard nothing is better than riding a grand tour with Steven and with Primoz and support them and also learn from them.”

2021 May 13:
"In April I slowly started cycling again and I also came back with a happy feeling more and more often. I thought: ‘oh yeah, this is really fun after all’. Then I decided to be present at the Amstel. And I found it very nice to see everyone again and to taste the atmosphere of the race. That triggered me to say ‘oh, this is a world in which I have built up something in recent years but that has also really become my world’. A world that I really like."

"We now have a plan containing the Tour de Suisse, the Dutch championships and the Olympics. The Olympics is really the main goal. We haven’t looked beyond that and I don't want to yet.”

As for the role of Vingegaard, keep in mind that he has his own mental quirks and had dealt very poorly with expectations.
Pretty sure Roglic was saying during the training camps that Vingegaard could win the Tour and staff told Roglic to shut up becasue Vingegaard couldn't handle that pressure.

Rog was trying to sabotage Vingegaard even back then.

Also pulled the long con on Kuss, naming him before the race as the third GC card for the 2023 Vuelta.

He should announce today that he sees Del Toro as his biggest rival here in the Giro.

I'm not so sure about that.. I have a feeling Ayuso got his place in the pecking order by seniority (and perhaps demanding it). And it's not unreasonable either that they promised it to him at the start of the season.

But now this seems to have turned into a case of "put your money legs where your mouth is". Because Del Toro certainly seems stronger at the moment. Then again, can he hang on in week three? And then again, can Ayuso? If anything, we're in for some of the ususal "when-Pog-isn't-there-UAE-drama" the coming weeks.
Del Toro, for all his obvious talent, was a favorite to win the stage because of his MTB background. He duly (almost) won. I think riders not named Pidcock, Hermans, Del Toro or Van Aert (offroad specialists) burned much more energy over the whole stage so in that context Ayuso did fine.

I'm still backing Ayuso to win; I don't think Roglic's team is up to supporting him and he looks a tiny bit less sharp than I thought he would.

It was a puncture, that prevented Rogla to win this stage or as plan B to possibly gain some seconds on Ayuso on the final climb. The outcome, plan C, hence has nothing to do with Rogličes riding skill or lack of them on gravel sections. Furthermore, if Rogla would really not feel comfortable on gravel sections, then he would have lost this Giro edition on stage 9.
