Fernando Gaviria Discussion Thread

I think his sprint timing is shot and his confidence is gone as well as missing the last 5% power required to win. I donot think this team management works for him. Somebody should calm him down and help him to think and wait. I think a return to Quickstep would be better.
He just finished 5th without a saddle in a 75+ kmh sprint. He's tried a couple of long-range moves that haven't worked out, but he's doing ok speed-wise. Timing is a thing that will come with practice. UAE have their stage win at this Giro, so the external pressure's probably pretty much off him.

Quickstep will almost certainly be better for him, provided this transition to a GC team with Remco takes a couple of years to reach full fruition, and Gaviria can still be their main sprinter at the Tour for a couple of seasons.

What was that about, he seemed to just no have the legs to come around Demare at the end, but it seems there was a technical issue.

Oh la la, I just read on Radsport News, German, that Matxin has harshly criticized the leaving Gaviria. Said that Gaviria lacks motivation to work hard, and that Gaviria arrives poorly prepared at races.

Unusual, normally they don‘t speak such harsh words publicly…
At QS they had more or less the same critic, but not that outspoken.

Pitty QS already took Merlier as 2nd sprinter. Gaviria might do a 'Cavendish' and find his old ways in his old nest.

Perhaps Wanty to replace Kristoff? But I supose Wanty doesn't have the budget to take him.

Probably he‘ll join Movistar.

Kanter has improved a lot since joining Movistar. I actually thought Kanter would be enough for them, because they traditionally don‘t have top sprinters.

When they have Gaviria and Kanter, this would make a strong duo. They could win more races, so more points.

Movistar always loved JJ Rojas, who always loved to become 5th in every mass sprint. With Kanter and Gaviria, they would have sprinters who can Top-5 in big races and stages, and podium 1.1 races and 2.1 stages…

I’m reluctant to just accept team management’s claims about departing or out of favour riders, but in this case a chronic lack of discipline would explain his career trajectory. The guy was the biggest young sprinting talent we’d seen in quite a while, but instead of kicking on from his early years, they basically remain his best
He's basically a Betancur. Once he got his cash, he just mailed it in from that point on. From the very second he signed with UAE, the deed was done and he couldn't care anymore. The type of messages suggesting this got out from very early and rumour has it he spent more time looking at porn on the team bus than paying attention to the team meeting - I do not make this up. Nowadays all he cares about is cars and he's just vibing with Sagan in Monaco. Difference is, Sagan has a palmares to back whatever he's doing up, Gaviria does not. He's more talented than 99% of the peloton, but also more lazy than 99%.

It's been 7 years since Betancur signed for Movistar, it's been 15 years since Rujano signed for Caisse d'Erpagne and Unzue hasn't learned a damn thing, nor will he be able to help him re-find that spark. What Gaviria needs is a Lefevere, but he threw that away.

He has remained a lot more competitive than Betancur (or Rujano) did though. He doesn’t show up to races with the physique of a recreational cyclist and he does still win pro races. You can’t be completely slacking off and do that.

Even since signing with UAE, he has fifteen wins and they actually extended his contract last year. Why would they do that if he was taking the mickey to that extent? I suppose there’s a lot of ground between a big champion’s level of dedication and sitting around drinking beer and having relaxed lunches with Betancur and if you are talented enough you can probably be reasonably competitive at some points in between.

UAE really do have the most underachieving once-promising sprinter group in the sport, with Gaviria, Ackermann and Hodeg. And it’s not like they are past it big names of the sort ISN keep signing. The oldest is 28.

Interesting stuff. I imagined something like this. I am not surprised. You could tell. Sagan was a good friend oh his and they met one year in Cartagena. LOL. Imagined that.

I would imagine it takes a lot more work to be competitive in the kind of races Betancur and Rujano were good at than being able to sprint.

That said, Gaviria has been climbing decently in certain periods, so I guess I arrive at the same conclusion that he hasn't been all bad/slacking.

Usually the thing that has been holding him back in sprints in recent years is his bad positioning/timing/loosing the wheel of his leadout man. It has also been mentioned here that his climbing has actually been decent. Also, how many times did he get Covid?

Maybe there is some truth, but IMO it's a bit overblown by the team, they should be careful or he might sue them for slander. Usually Saronni was the classless guy bashing riders who were on their way out, leaving (even talked smack about Ganna not living up to his potential and once he goes to a good team it's night and day...)

I mean, not the best time to revive this thread, but just really thought this photo did a great job of summing up his Giro after a fairly promising spring. Hope he makes it to Rome (or at least Caorle) and he can give it at least one more proper go.
