Usually when I see posts of mine from years back I shake my head and think - Damn was that really me.

But these one I see now I fell happy with and hold pretty much still the same opinion. Apart from I don't dislike professional football so much anymore since after a few more years in the clinic I feel i can appreciate more the sacrifices athletes make.

It surprised me though to read foxxy say upthreas that favourites win more in American football than in association football.

It surprises me because in our football the best teams usually have the best players in every position since there is nothing to even it out. The best teams get the most money and use that to buy the better players of weaker teams.

The weaker teams don't get favoured with the first draft choice, on the contrary when a young superstar decides to join the big leagues (e.g. neymar), atletico bilbao aren't going to be in the driver's seat to sign him and build a team around him. Instead he will sign for 1 of the giants and fit into an already world beating team.

More importantly there's no salary cap so real Madrid don't have to decide which 200 grand a week player they don't need, they can keep them all.

And in the nfl teams don't develop their own talent so having superior academies or academy scouts isn't going to help build a superteam e.g. Barcelona.

So you have teams like barca, real, man u, man c, bayern, 90% of the matches they play they have the better player on every position on the pitch and even their sub players are superior to the opponents starters.

In nfl meanwhile when pats play Texans on Sunday they may be the much better team but Houston still has players in some positions like Andre Johnson or JJ Watt who are better than what nep have to offer.

Generally agree with your every point, but Athletic Bilbao was a weird pick for the example simply because they're the one team that has a deliberately self-restricting transfer policy and so wouldn't be interested in a new phenom unless he fulfilled their signing criteria (in which case he would either have been brought into the Bilbao system early or otherwise the situation you mention develops where they can't offer them the money that Barcelona or Madrid can).
