Front page content derived from furum

Just to make one point clear:

There have been two news stories which quote forum users. Both are based on threads I established solely for that purpose, in both of which it was clearly stated that they would be used for news stories.

Your thoughts on forum users producing content for the main site, please.

Why is there a problem?
I think its a good idea myself not that I've contributed on them - Probably for the best because I talk too much crap at the best of times.

As long as it stays like this, there's nothing wrong with it. It's a good way to promote the forum.

I think the best of forum posts are of a higher quality than some main site content. CN doesn't seem to go for opinion stuff much, but I imagine it's hard to find well informed writers of that stuff. So here's a nice free source of cycling journalism. I would consider it equivalent to using unpaid interns.

I note that the stuff used was taken from threads which were flagged as 'for the main site.'.

I have every intention of keeping it that way. It is an important point to me, as well.

Actually, of course, all postings here are public and accessible to all. Just out of curiosity, what would you think if some other website wrote a story based on something in the CN forum?

This has not happened and I don't mean that it will. And not meaning if some rider for example joined the forum and said something newsworthy (like Floyd Landis did several years ago with the Daily Peloton forum).

Certainly one of the reasons for flagging such threads is that anyone who does not want their name or comments to appear on the main site can thus avoid writing in the thread.

I think it would be a little weird if some other site suddenly wrote According to user 'RedheadDane' of the Cyclingnews.com forum bla bla bla I'd also find it weird if someone else was mentioned but mostly myself.

I don't think they'd mention names though. Here people (or at least those who contribute regularily and are known for their... knowledge... may have earned some kind of "authority" on the matter. On any other site most people would probably just look at the username and go "Who that?"

And just noticed a typo in the thread title. Furum. Sorry taiwan! Can't unsee!

"furum", oops.

Well, seems to be a unique viewpoint of mine. Just feel that there's a potential to exploit peoples' excitement at being on the front page to get e.g. opinion, race favourites/previews, when a journalist should be getting paid to produce these. After all, it's a commercial site. If the forum's better informed than the main site, so be it. Let's not have the forum yoked up to improve the FP. I don't think CN should overrate it's contribution to the forum - a server and some off the shelf software (I assume almost all the mods are volunteers) - and it's entitlement to use what's posted.

Another site using the forum as a source? Well, say Vaughters makes a statement about someone/thing in The Clinic, and a sharp poster explained the implications of it. I'd expect what Vaughters said to be reported, but not the response of the ordinary poster. I think it would be out of order to use it without permission.

I suppose I'll have to be satisfied with reminding people that their expertise and contributions aren't all worthless. Although I'll admit that mine pretty much are. /rant

Its a public forum.

Anything I say on it can be used by CN. That includes using either my opinion or a group consensus on which to write an opinion piece - though if they are attributing something to me, I would hope they get it right :p)

I like the articles, and I like the way they are made from specific threads so those users who do not want to be quoted can simply not post - but the rules are that you are offering a public opinion every time you post.

Just to flag up that this rule has been dispensed with. Not to pick on Susan.

Yes it has, but ive seen several Articles written based on things said on the Forum, and a few articles based on discussion on the forum that have led onto other things. Certainly Anthony Tan has referred to things on the forum at least once.

lol, if you bothered to check, you would realise that the "Greatest of all Time" bit is a link to a youtube video of someone else. The athlete I consider to be "The Greatest of all time".

So thats a bit of a fail.

The post meanwhile was a joke, hence the smiley. You might not get it but I wrote it in the hope that the more friendly posters on the forum would.

Doesn't bother me.

It could be argued that a forum is a way of establishing the cycling public's opinion on issues.

As long as any article written would be subject to fairness, objectivity and accuracy, then it is fine.

Interesting, I didn't know that.

But of course everything here is publicly available, and therefore open to use by others.

Susan

I remembered that a Danish paper used comments from the forum during the Worlds.

Pretty innocent and amusing stuff.
