I think you guys underplay the 'marginal gains'. The Clinic acuses so many riders of doping that i think for Froome you are heading down the road of saying he is on transfusions but i seriously doubt cycling has gone back there.

I kinda agree with you. I think if Froome is on a programme, it's not a straight EPO/blood bag one. The consistency, the slight dropoff in week 3 of the 2013 TdF, it doesn't line up with what we got used to seeing during the 2000's.

Purito and Valverde among others, on the other hand, seem to be on a classic programme. They might not be doing full bags but the effect seems very much like the old days.

I think we shouldn't fall into the trap of, because we know so much more about it due to the revelations of the past few years, that oxygen vector doping is the be-all-and-end-all of doping, or that Armstrong-era level performances can only be achieved with help from it.

From what we've seen so far it's usually only done to try and nab retired/deceased dopers from tours held some 15 years ago. Chances are we'll get retro AICAR positives in time for the 2027 Vuelta

Just thinking about the Lance doping saga and trying to forecast where Froome will end up when he gets caught.

Whereas Lance is now being sued his pants off in various ways, what are the chances of that happening with Froome? What is his liability situation? Sponsors suing him?

In fact, is there any downside other than to reputation and current cycling team earnings potential?

To me there is only upside, even when he finally gets caught the potential for book revenues, oprahs and other gigs far outweighs just being a grupetto rider...

As a general rule, WADA likes to retest as close to the end of the statute of limitations as possible, to get the most up to date tests. There's often a limited amount of sample, and repeat testing can introduce risks of contamination. If you consider some of the recent IAAF retests that caught a large number of throwers, many of the results being analyses are from thr 2005-2007 era - 8 yrs run out between 2013-2005.

Clearly this has a big downside in terms of immediate rectification of cheating results. In the case of a new test, it's perhaps a difficult call - might there be a much better AICAR test in say 4 yrs against the need for swift justice.
