Who knows what the maximum sentence is for offences against public health in Spanish law?

Extraordinary timing of this announcement is extraordinary. ;)

true. At the least this will prevent Saiz from re-entering the sport and will cost him some heavy legal fees.

The damage that guy has done to the sport is amazing

a show trial. hardly gonna expose all those big Spanish sports stars now are they? This will run and run without anything happening is my prediction. I would lve to see all those involved named and sanctioned while the docs go to jail.

Who knows? But there does seem to be an air of contrition sweeping across Iberia these days and now that Zapatero's preparing his Out of Office Reply, what will Rajoy do to steal a few austerity headlines - throw somebody under a bus? :D

Tweet from Florian Kalz saying that the charge carries a sentence of 2 years. L'Equipe article above has been updated to reflect this.

Paltry, but the bad press should do the rest. :)

Might also have an impact on his medical license. Probation (if they have it) could be intrusive. Might be hard for him to get back to business. Might also prompt him to start talking.

Lots of possibilities.

I didn't realise that Spain had any taxpayers money left to waste.

This is excellent, and surprising, news. We can only hope that something will come out of this after all the efforts to suppress and delay any legal proceedings against these criminals. It would also be nice if some of the other sports involved in the Fuentes doping came to light, though I am not holding my breath.

I agree. I also wonder how much of this is prompted by the press coming down on Spanish sports regulators, including Noah's comments of last week.

Come on, did his patients ever complain of health problems due to his treatments?

I am calling this a show trial also, and wishing with all my might that I'll be proven massively wrong.

I think the good news here is the rules of discovery apply, unless I'm mistaken, in some form in pretty much every court of law (in the West, at least). So a court date for these guys in this case means that the list of athlete/team clients is going to come out in trial. They may try to sequester (or whatever lawyers call it) that info, but it will almost surely become public. In fact, the defense will probably see this as something of a trump card - "going nuclear."

There are many stories we probably won't ever know, but boy I would love to know the doping program ONCE were on when they had the number 1 and 2 riders in the world (Zulle and Jalabert) racing for their team.

What was the concoction that allowed Jalabert to dominate from 1995-1997? How much EPO and/or blood transfusions was he taking to ride the way he did during that time?

And if my suspicions are correct, how in the world is he not dead?

I just hope the "public" gets named who cares if they get 10 min in jail. Getting all the names out in public may just start the press into looking at other sports as well as Cycling

Heres one hoping Fuentes will speak out freely if hes sentenced to two years prison time.

I know its quite naive but one can hope :).

Remember, when Puerto first broke, the Spanish judiciary insisted that they couldn't charge the participants with anything, since "Spain doesn't have any laws against doping".

Assuming the newer Spanish anti-doping laws don't apply to what happened before they were enacted (as is normal legal precedent), these charges puts the lie to the claim that Spain could do nothing at the time.

I hope all of the footballers, and tennis players names come out. It could vindicate many of us (including Yannik Noah, Pat McQuaid, and others), that Spain IS a special case (much like East Germany was in the 70s and 80s).

Crimes against public health is a charge against the doctor, though. Going to a dodgy doctor isn't an offence - being one is. Surely there must be something to get them on, I would have thought just plain ol' regular fraud would suffice.

Never, Fuentes will receive a lot of money from Barcelona, Madrid, Nadal to keep his mouth shut. When he will go out of jail, after half of his sentence in a golden jail, he just has to retire.

And suddenly, for the first time in his career, we´ll see Iniesta in bad shape. Fatigued from playing too many matches in no time. :)

Manzono had complications and complained. The same guy the UCI tried to sue for talking about Fuentes 3 years before Pureto blew up.

Not much money coming from the Cycling side though.
Alberto is already blowing his budget it seems. Can't do it all.

If your theory holds true, poupou, cycling will bear the brunt of this expose.
Maybe it will be payback for Oscar P breaking the Omerta on TV?
Mosquera already got spanked yesterday.

so far this just seems to be talk, much like the LA case in America. Until charges a filed this doesn't mean much and we will still don't know the truth

We know that Puerto broke 5 1/2 years ago, and we were told no charges were coming. We know politicians from the previous government, like Zapaterro, and Lissavezky were protecting Spanish sportsmen, against accusations.

Now, a few days after a change in government, we finally get charges laid ? This can't be a coincidence.
