It might not stay equal though, it might go up, he's still only 24. He didn't even plan to ride the Vuelta as a GC contender. So it's questionable he was on the top of what he could do in this stage of his developement as a rider. Give him a 80-100km TT GT and he'll be a contender for sure. And there will be one of those within the next 8 Years, and that's space of time we are talking about concerning Dumoulin.

I am much more sceptical about Landa winning won than Dumoulin. He doesn't strike me as overly consistent and his TT is abysimal, I can also see him in deep trouble in hard hilly stages.

Why would he need it to be TT heavy?

He was one climb from winning this years Vuelta.

If he loses a kilo or two without losing power, he'll win a GT.

Don't think he is at the level of big four yet
He was ~~2 min down before the TT. He had an advantage of 1 min before real mountains in the Vuelta due to anonymity

Quintana and Aru (and to a lesser extent Froome) might go on for years, so young riders will have to compete with them if they want to win. Dumoulin has gained everybody's sympathy, but he still has to confirm. Of the young talents Dumoulin (and Van Garderen) are the only ones with a good flat time trial, so the choice of the organizers on how many time trialing they include will have an influence. But even if there are fewer kilometers ITT than there used to be, it will always be important.

As to other the other riders mentioned in the thread: Zakarin, M. A. Lopez and the Yates brothers we'll see if they can already show something next year. Good to see that Richie Porte still has his believers too.

Can honestly say I only believe in Landa, Majka and Pinot out of the options listed here. However, even their chances are not that big, due to various reasons:
Landa (wrong team choice though)
Majka (Nice progression, but is the talent big enough?)
Pinot (More luck/better tactical skills required)
The other options are not very likely to win, as it is now: JRod seems content with what he's achieved in his career, while Dumoulin still needs to prove more. Tejay will never win a GT because of his attitude, whilst Bardet/Chavez/Armador are just not viable candidates.
Interestingly, Zakarin is more of a viable choice (given that complications don't prevent him from racing GT's in the future. He's a more complete rider than most of the 2nd tier GT specialists that are listed in the poll.

Possibly, but he's hasn't shown it yet. All the riders in this poll have at least been in the mix, battling for a top position.

I think Bardet could have a chance at the Giro and possibly the Vuelta. He doesn't quite have the consistency yet, but is still young so should improve. At his best he is among the top climbers and he can hold his own quite well in a time trial. I don't see a massive gulf in ability and potential between him and Pinot.

I just with one or both of them would try to peak for something other than the Tour.

Thinking out loud, is it possible that Rohan Dennis could surprise everybody as Dumoulin did? His climbing is not that bad, look at his performances in Down Under and Alberta this year (okay not the heaviest races, but still) and his TT capabilities are outstanding.

I actually thought that a performance like Dumoulin's would be more plausible coming from Dennis a few times during the Vuelta, after some of his performances at races like California and the Dauphine.

Think he's more of a one-week type of rider. Pure TT's have enough stamina to power up mountain stages for a one week race, but over 3 weeks, not so much. TD is a special breed, but even he too didn't last on the final day.

There is a long way ahead of Landa, if he's going to reach the likes of Joaquim Rodriguez, one of the very best of the last 5 years.

P.S. If someone gets over the cols with the best all the time, he's among them
