At least it frees everyone up to go for stage wins, assuming anyone can still ride a bike.

Yes that's about the sum of it.

They are well and truly out of it in GC terms. No chance of their traditional top 10, let alone the better result they were hoping for. One of their potential GC men is out and the other two have lost shedloads of time. Even Dan Martin, who wasn't supposed to be going for GC in the first place, has lost huge amounts of time due to crashes despite not actually hitting the deck himself.

The only team who comes close to them in the bad luck stakes is Rabobank, but even they still have guys in top 10 contention.

They'll be riding like a French wildcard team now, trying to put people in every break. And hopefully they'll go nuts on the climbs with Martin and, if healthy, Hesjedal. They certainly aren't going to be marked for GC purposes.

Now I officialy hate the Tour. I mostly cheered for Hesjedal, and now it's all over. Last year when Contador lost time I wasn't so angry, because he was then a few times GT winner, etc, and I felt, that he is strong enough to take back that time.
But now? I want to say f*** this s***, but I will not, and I hope that tomorrow they will show want they can do. I'm sure that they will attack, and I just hope, that the fate will give them something back.

But until that, **** this **** :(

Props to Tommy D.

Dang. I was hoping he would top five this year.

He shouldn't have been in that crash...he's previous day injury was already bad enough to abandon.

He even said "if it was up to him, he would go home." Vaughters is a diaster when in the car. He's built a good program, but should stay admistrative.

Tommy D was coaxed into staying in the race on some fantasy that he could ride through it.

JV's dreadful...it shouldn't be up to Danielson to decide. DS and doctors should.

Edit: Vansummeren next unnecessary casualty?

I saw an interview with Danielson. He said he would have abandoned, but the team persuaded him to stay in.

I didn't expect him to start today. I was a little surprised that Hesjedal abandoned before him.

Is there a minimum number of riders a team must hold to stay in the race. Farrar does not seem to far away from being withdrawal #5

Surely the minimum number is 1 - at least I hope it is - it would be incredibly silly & unfair to kick out riders / teams just because their teammates were caught in crashes...

I'm pretty sure that there's no lower limits for how few riders of a team there must be. Obviously they won't be in for the team GC.

But wouldn't Farrar "only" be withdrawal #4?

Don't think its announced, but he really should go for it. Pretty good route for him and with the Giro start in Belfast '14 everything seems to fit together imo.

Yup Dan will focus on the Worlds + Lombardia after the TDF.

Well he will always suffer with his time trial, I think.

However, if the stars are aligned, he could get a podium in a Vuelta with one time trial, especially if it is not too long and/or flat.

I would find it difficult to imagine him performing consistently with guys like Froome, Contador, Rodriguez, Nibali et al if he has to face three mountain stage in a row like the trio of stages ending in Cuitu Negro last year.
