Pretty smart idea by Belkin. Next year they'll offer sponsors the chance to only be a sponsor for a certain period of time. For example, for only the duration of a certain race like the TDF.

That sends red flags my way. At present a sponsor wants a team to the TDF they have to fund an entire team for an entire season.

If this catches on, many sponsors will just throw all their money at the TDF, potentially raising salaries of top riders who choose the TDF, increasing further the gap between TDF and everything else.

Tend to agree.
Looks like we are headed in the ultra short term business opportunity direction.
Reverse auction.

Yeah, I could definitely see that as a potential problem. And one that I think the teams should come up to some kind of solution for, not sure they would care to bother coming up with a solution for it though as it would still mean extra sponsorship money during the Tour.

One solution though could be to only open up the team to other sponsors for certain races. Or only allow other sponsors for the smaller races, just keep the main sponsor for the GT's and monuments.

Several sponsors can join mid-season and this has happened and led to a continuation many times before. From recent memory, High Road became Columbia mid-2008, Team Columbia became Columbia-HTC before the 2009 Tour then became HTC-Columbia the next year, Slipstream-Chipotle became Garmin after the 2008 Giro but before the 2008 Tour, Saxo Bank became a second sponsor to CSC before the 2008 Tour, and Tinkoff did the same to the same squad after Saxo took over as lead sponsors in 2009. Banco BIC bought out Carmim last year before the Volta, while Xacobeo replaced Karpin as lead sponsors of the Galicia unit halfway through the 2008 season. Obviously Belkin themselves are another obvious call.

I think they should be made to stay for the rest of the current season when they sign on though.

I don't think it'll be a problem, the team still needs to be pretty strong to be in the WT for this idea to work.
It's just another way to generate more revenue for the team. It'll be a lot of work for the staff but if they pull it of it could work well for Belkin.

Could it be related to the Bianchi rumor I heard 1-2 weeks ago?
Although Bianchi is working with Belkin right now...

Site that is referenced there for the new team says they want to be a development squad. So not world tour i don't think. haven't heard anything else about it so far either so i would take this with a grain of salt until we get something more concrete.

yeah not a fan as such, nothing great have sponsors come in for just a tour and not a year at least.

Anyone know who google are getting involved with.

disapoitned this morning to hear that argos shimano only saved at the end by Giant coming after the company they had deal with pulled out. Makes sense for Giant to want get in with a team since the other big bike makers are getting involved.

So it was indeed the blue Giant team bus I saw this Monday morning in my city! Already had such a feeling, but wasn't sure at all.

Thought it would become a German sponsor like Würth or Vaillant. Or at least Vredestein. So I'm a bit disappointed. Why did Argos Oil signed such a long contract 2 years ago, just to pull out now? They're very active in my city also, maybe they already got what they wanted with Kittel last summer.

Multiple online sources are reporting that Argos Oil is in the midst of a Russian takeover, which has forced them to put any further sponsorship commitments on ice.

As someone pointed out on the CN article comments, the prospect of Kittel roaring across the finish line with the word "GIANT" plastered across his chest has a certain amount of awesome attached to it.

Not quite. The Russian takeover went wrong, and the main shareholder blames the CEO for thwarting the process, and wants to see money (tens of millions of euros). The CEO happens to be the driving force behind the cycling sponsorship.

Guess most of you have known this for a while, but Astana finaly got their womens team ready. and you could read about it for some months now. So Be Pink, changes name to Astana Be Pink. Zulya Zabirova seems to be heavily involved...
