Future Grand Tour winner, here he comes.

“Dave and I talked about it three days ago,” confided former Wales coach Sutton, an Australian who lives in Cardiff.

“Him and I know Geraint can win a Grand Tour. Geraint and Peter Kennaugh are probably two of the most exciting British riders when it comes to Tour potential and fortunately one of them (Thomas) is our’s here in Wales.

Thomas is a decent all-rounder and there in lies the problem. He can hang around with the top guys to a point but lacks that little extra to go with them.

A week stage race where there are all kinds of stages would suit him since he would perform well in most of them and can limit his losses. Something like the TDU and PN probably suit his skill set. Hence him giving a good account of himself there. You could also argue that the top guys are either missing or using it as training but perhaps that is being a bit harsh.

Be interesting to see how his classics campaign goes as he looked in reasonable form last year but was never on his bike long enough to see what he could do.

Sky really need to learn to play their cards more wisely. Man against man they are not going to beat Boonen, Cancellara or Sagan. Although, that said, OPSQ look to have a formidable classics team this year.

Thomas is arguably the best all rounder around at the moment, I can't think of any other rider who can do everything to the extent he can. The trouble is, he isn't the best (or even one of the best 10) at anything. He will probably just end up being the ultimate super domestique but I would like to be proved wrong.

Kwiatkowski?
Tbh I'd take the shane sutton article with a pinch of salt. He does enjoy making fairy bold predictions and statements. Rather than seeing G try to specialise in one area id like to see him just race as much as possible. What will be will be.

I'd bet a lot he never wins a grand tour. Seems sorta like Yaroslav Popovych(or Hincapie as was said.) He's a good support rider, but he doesn't have it in him to win a gt....imo.

have agree in a way so much talent but you need that something special to win, he hasn't really shown glimpses enough, this paris nice is unlike any grand tour any way, he will always be a luxury domestique who could do something in one days

Shane Sutton already said G could become a very good GT rider in 2012.

From the article:

Sutton already rates the Cardiff-born rider as "one of Wales' greatest sportsmen of all time" and believes a Tour de France victory is well within his capabilities.

"Because he is a grand tour rider, one of the best grand tour riders that we have, and he's a guy that actually I think could go a long way in a grand tour if he wanted," said Australian Sutton.

"He can lead out, he can climb - he can do everything. He's one of the great bike riders out there at this moment in time."

A very important skill for a man aiming at a GT win.
