I think he could become a very good climber if he dropped some weight. don't know how heavy he is right now. but if he drop 6 kg. no doubt

Definitely, showed it at the Tour. Finished 31st overall as well there which is decent for a guy that weight imo.

He said he surprised himself with how comfortable he was at times during the Tour. Up until then I think he doubted he could do the big climbs.

Will be nice if/when he finally gets to race for himself a bit.

Is it really that offensive to you that people are discussing a cyclist on a cycling forum?

Nobody has said anything close to "next Indurain" or "next Merckx".

I find it rather silly people are already trying to make a climber out of him while he clearly has set his mind on the cobbled classics. As if becoming a climber is as simple as 'just' losing 6kgs. Get a grip.

You are the only one calling him Eddy Merckx or Indurain though if you LOOK ;)

Nobody said he will be those. He has a potential to be a good climber, we dont know how good can he be. What we know is next year he will target cobbles, train TT and do brilliant leadout for Cavendish. He'll also take his opportunity in a race or so. He wont train as much on climbs than on cobbles so I agree with you on that part ;) NOBODY said he would be those riders so stop saying that ;)

I was using a hyperbole. He hasn't shown much climbing ability, not that left a memorable impression anyway. Everyone can become a good climber then, rather pointless to even make that statement then.

I'm working with the proof we have and it clearly points towards the cobbled classics and short time trials. Not a climber. We already have enough wannabe GT riders in the peloton ;)

That's the question for this topic after all, what should he aim for. Sorry for giving you my answer to that! And if you ask me, his talent is wasted if he's going to be stuck in lead-out duty all the time.

What does Gilbert have to do with this? Good luck finding a quote from me on Westra. And what does he have to do with this anyway?

You can never discuss something on topic would you huh?

I find Ryo extremely funny. All the time. Just bashing ppl left and right. :p

I thibk he did it rightfully. Pisti turned this thread is Geraint new Merckx. Nobody was talking about that, even if it was hyperbolic.

G must go for the Classics-both Cobbles & Ardennes & forget about being a Lead man for Cav:D he'll be a legend in Britain if he succeeds in Belgium

He's amazing at lead-outs though. I still remember his leadout in Paris-Nice stage 3 in 2011 when he destroyed the HTC train and got Henderson the win :)

I think his career path has already been defined. He'll ride cobbles in the spring and then lead out Cav for the rest of the year. Quite right too, as I think he'll become one of the very best at both, if he isn't already. If he can pick up the odd prologue / TT result along the way, then that's great.

:confused:Are we talking about the same Britain who dont know the first thing about cycling (except tour and WC) and where only a minute fraction of the population could name you Britain's last monument winner.
Its getting better but not that fast.

It's that bad the following/knowledge of the Sport in Britain??

Tour de France and the Olympics are all that most casual sports fans will know.

The cycling fanbase is definitely getting bigger and more informed though.
