It's actually quite amazing the results Gesink had this last couple of seasons while dealing with this problem.

Why on earth are you comparing him to Dekker? He's just a mediocre domestique while Gesink has been solidly among the 50 best riders in the world even in the last few seasons when, apparently, he should already have retired.

I mentioned him because unlike Gesink he's a prime candidate to retire, but probably won't either. Probably still has options to ride for a Dutch or Belgian CT team. Gesink has much less reason to retire and IMO definitely won't

Obviously he needs to stop focusing on GTs, though, but will he ever learn?

Keep in mind though that it only mnifested itself once a year on average. Before the MTT in the 2013 Giro it didn't cause Gesink any stress, either, according to the man himself. So, when he was dropped on the first mountain top finish of the Giro last year that had nothing to do with it. All the more reason to assume that he'll continue to be a relatively mediocre climber for the remainder of his career.

But it plays in the mind. He might hold back in fear of his heart going haywire, therefore not being able to go 100% as fast as he could have gone

Like I said though, apparently only since he dropped out the Giro last year, according to Gesink himself.

Who knows, maybe he's been afraid to go a little too far in the red for a few years already. He's even said it on a couple of occasions, that he can't go too far in the red, although he said it in the context of his inability to follow explosive attacks.

Even with the occasional irregular beat it will cause inconsistent performance. Makes you fragile. He should try the ablation therapy. Could change things for him.

Sometimes it can happen during a race and your legs just stop working. Gives you a panic sensation. Then it can stop and not happen again the whole race. By that time your race is over.

Can also imagine if your heartrate goes up early in the race and you notice it, you'll get scared to go fully into the red on the final climb...So Gesink might have been racing at only 90/95% of his physical capabilities all the time

According to Gesink it's the other way around.

Arrythmia since 2008, once a year. The stress/thought of it happening during a race causing panic attacks/hyperventilation attacks

A picture from 2009, you're not going to argue that he sucked back then, are you?

Lol, running out of bullsh.t arguments again?

Belkin, for all I care, may disappear, I won't miss them. But that's not the point. The point is that you're so easy to refute, it's just too tempting :p

Gesink is training again btw. Today a journalist ran into him while visiting the olympia's tour. Appearently it was Gesinks 3rd training ride since the operation

Panic attack can be caused by increased level of lactate in blood, if one has disposition (or condition). It can be his case.

Vuelta is a realistic goal. He feels good already, but he says he and the team will ofcourse look at how it develops. There might be a setback in fitness at some point

Perhaps he's better of WT races this season considering the mental side of his problem. He can ride a good calendar anyway with the italian semi-classics, Burgos and stuff like that.

Gesink will go to the Sierra Nevada TDF preparation training camp...

He will look how that goes and then decide if he goes for Tour or Vuelta..

I think he should steer clear of the tour, considering he had/has a stress-related problem and the tour is nothing but stress throughout. Let him gain confidence on the bike in races like Emilia and the least stressful GT, the Vuelta.

However, the Tour is important for Belkin and Gesink, especially with his recent surgery, does attract a lot of attention for the team.
