Looks like a great finish. Hoping for decent weather (I guess if the conditions were bad, they'd finish at some point lower on the Stelvio) and things to start really happening on the Mortirolo.

Looks like a great stage but I have not sure the last saturday is the place to put it. It seems that nothing much tends to happen on the first or last mountain stages in a GT.

What about Sastre winning the TdF on the Alpe D'Huez - ok that was the day before the penulatimate stage but it was the last MTF.

I was thinking more recently than that, but you are right. This year nothing much, last year the Vuelta did have some good racing, nothing much in the other two. 2009 Mount Ventoux was a joke in the tour, can't remember the Giro or Vuelta because I did not follow them. More often than not the last mountain stage is a let down, this one is very very hard so it might be an exception but I think there is a possibility again everything will be decided and not much will happen.

I would have preferred to see them on 2 separate stages. As such it's about 20 km further from the top of Mortirolo to Stelvio than to Aprica and 22km @ 7% would likely make people less aggressive on the Mortirolo.

Almost as if the new organizers are looking to be just as extreme as Zomegnan, but in a more traditional way.

I hope they don't stick too many of their eggs into this one, very late basket.

To the hitch, I don't see it the same as the Ventoux or Finnestre last year. Because of the grinding long climb and altitude change I see it more like the Galibier finish in this year's Tour. Again "time to exhaustion" playing a big role.

This isn't the best possible stage of course, but it's still better than many other in recent history. Overall I'm satisfied.

no more than 4 guys will be in the lead group over mortirolo.
if rujano will be in form for il giro just like this year and he won't get sick again,it will be just one conquering mortirolo and heading like a rocket to stelvio.
there is not such thing as teams staying compact on mortirolo after 20 days of racing,it will be chaos.

The peloton will climb the Passo Di Pampeago (which is sterrato, but probly they'll put tarmac on it before next May), then turn back climbing the Passo Di Lavazè (yeah!) and then the final kms to The Alpe Di Pampeago itself.
If this is the route (and I want you to note the "if") this is a GREAT stage.

by then rujano has this sealed and in the bag. will be interestign to see how many hils and sterrato they put in and also itt km, only chance to beat him, before mountains like this year. this year he was on a level above with contador and if he hadn't losy 8 minutes combined in rainy weather and sterrato thanks to his lacking team, not even taking in the fact he rode on anti biotics the final week he would've been 2nd a mile ahead of everyone else

What are the chances riders protest to have Mortirolo taken out? Crostis Zoncolan would have been special, but with the climbs coming up before this, this has got to be a rival.

I thought Aprica was a chance...

Turns out that poll was not much of a poll, just a list of all the climbs to be included in this years edition.

We already have 5 of them in this 1 stage, including the 2 winners.

MTFs are a pest in today's cycling and finishes after a descent are best suited as the last stages of a mountain bloc or a GT, as they encourage movements from far away. See Mortirolo-Aprica 2010 (not a true descent finish but that concept works wonders as well).

the only questionable aspect of it is the date in the race & how is going to affect the overall results-so we need to be a bit patient until the entire parcours is revealed by the organizers. Looks promising

Gap and Pinerrolo arguably most exciting stages of this years one. Definately most exciting finishes.
