No one's talking about a prospective big gainer in the GC from that break.

As it stands now, Maxime Montfort would jump from 15 th to 6th or 5 th.

Monfort is a true ninja. The rightful successor of Sensei Haimar. King of the ghost top 15. Lord of the seven anonymous mountain breakaways and Khal of the camera dodgers.

Polanc isn't a real GC threat though. I can see the other teams believing they'd get him back tomorrow. Also, Sunweb would be happy to relinquish pink methinks...

I perfectly undestand Sunweb"s play in here. Not having to defend teh pink jersey makes things easier. And, even if Polanc managed to stay with Dumoulin, on the last TT , he could easily take back up to 2 minutes on Polanc.

But, based on teh first TT, Polanc is equal to most other GC contenders.

Not watching the stage ATM, and I realized my mental picture of Maxime is from when he was leading Andy down a descent six years ago. I have no idea how he looks like today. I assume he's no longer rocking the longish hair and the six-o-clock shadow, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, QS **** up themselves. Why would they let Polanc get away so much?

I don't get it. And there not alone. Where were Ktusha, Barhein, FDJ , Movisatr and all teh other teams who have a GC contender ahead of Polanc ?

Wont Costa be burned out setting pace for Polanc?

At the moment, Costa is not doing much work for Polanc. Maybe his team is keeping him in reserve for teh win. Mohoric is doing a lot of work. UAE cannot count on many of the team of teh break to help though now. They have leaders in the peloton that are now fearing Polanc. And others like Rolland and TVG will try to win. As it is clear that he break will dispute the win, they have little interest in helping.

The reason they let Polanc get so far ahead is because they believe that by the end of the stage the gap won't be so large (and it won't ), they know that Polanc will lose significant time over the coming stages, especially because of today's stage (and he will) and they are trying to conserve energy for the coming stages, they needed this transitional stage to recover and prepare. Overall, there was and is no need for concern.
