Re:

If Dumoulin actually wins this race, with this kind of team support, it would be one of the most impressive performances in recent memory imo.

that was my recollection too - about 10 seconds or so. also if memory serves me right - i had not seen any official intermediate results - dumo was behind nibs/quintana about 1:20 by the last hilltop in that stage 16 and about 2:15 or so at the finish...

all from my recallection of the on-screen timing. which sometimes is crazy due to ceing fed from the gps updates...

No, as far as I remember, Dumoulin lost a bunch on the last 1 or 2 km of the ascent and then kept the gap stable down into the finish.
it is not easy to approximate accurately the timing gaps...when nibs attacked with 2 km to go, only quintana could follow. zak and pozzo were gapped with zak eventually bridging back before the topping. so i recall it was the 3 with the same time crossing the top. the on screen timing was not easy to read b/c they did not update all that often. yes, i agree, the last couple km to the top tom was losing more and more seconds. so perhaps 1:20 was the marker when it started to grow.

yet i do not recall it ever growing to over 2 minutes, while tom lost definately more than 2 minutes at the finish.

that is - he was descending slower than nibs and quintana...
