Because in this case you can always make the argument that Cataldo is pulling for his own chances of winning the stage. You couldn't make that argument with someone giving a wheel away.

Well, to be fair the "no mechanical assistance" rule is a clear bright-line that is easy to enforce. There would be too many difficult judgment calls in deciding when someone is riding just to help a rider from another team rather than to help himself or his teammates.
