La Flamme Rouge tweeted a few days ago that Cuneo wants to bring Fauniera back but RCS doesn't want because of concerns with the descent. If they don't use Fauniera, the strongest possibility is Prato Nevoso.
yes, that stage is fixed since months but they cannot seem to agree on route and finish.
Ofc I would love to see Fauniera back, but Vegni's attitude wrt the riders' safety complaints doesn't really make me optimistic.

What's the problem with the descent? Does it need new tarmac?
no, it's just narrow and technical, and being very isolated from any kind of civilization makes it very risky in case someone needs to be taken to the hospital.

Was that a problem in 1999?! It sounds like a fixable logistical problem.

Hmmm...there are no direct flights from Tel Aviv to Sicily. So they might have to do a layover in Athens or Roma. And I have a premonition, that south americans will once again face visa problems.

This will be a transfer nightmare of three weeks, that will take away the double possibility, that a one week later starting TdF had opened.

it was a problem in 1999 too. Only, nobody cared in those days.
I mean if the riders complained about this year's Mont du Chat descent, they could directly go on strike against Fauniera... ^^"

well I don't think they'd take a public flight anyway.

Not that it's in any way realistic, but looking around at the possibilities for finishing in Lago della Rovina, I realized that Briançon -> Izoard -> Agnello -> Sampeyre -> Fauniera -> Madonna di Colletto -> Lago della Rovina is only 207km. :)

Can somebody make sure Gigs doesn't watch the Giro route presentation, I want at least Fauniera.

This sounds absolutely incredible so far. Two TT's, an early mtf, Zoncolan, a dolomites stage, and a stage around Sestriere. Only thing I really dislike so far is the start in Israel and I probably would dislike a stage to Prato Nevoso. Let's just pray that RCS agrees to Fauniera but I don't really believe in it.

If riders think the descent is too dangerous, they can just go down slower.

I need me Sampeyre-Fauniera- combo.

Are there images of the Fauniera descent from 99?

I don't know about still images, but I do know that the descent wasn't seen on the TV coverage due to fog.

The descent of Fauniera is ridden every year in a Granfondo. You can surely find amateur footage.

Yes, the Passo Daone descent in the 2015 Giro was probably more dangerous, a technical descent on a narrow road in a deciduous forest with constantly changing light conditions.

Was it the Fauniera descent where the hawk closed freaking 2 minutes on Pantani downhill!?
he was two minutes back at the top, in the valley he ended up one minute in front.
Sad that we don't have much of a footage. The top half was in the fog and by the bottom half Savoldelli had dropped the motorbike that was trying to follow him :D

If the Fauniera actually gets used I can already hear some idiots say in interviews that the sport gets crazier and crazier and that this development has to stop since descents like that surely were a no-go 20 years ago...right?

Probably. I really want to see it. It's a climb I've never seen ridden before, and the great proximity to other passes and the great name only make me want to see it more.
