Hatch has this annoying habit of using 'would' when speaking in the past tense. Like 'he would go on to win the stage that day' - just say he won the stage!

perhaps he's trying to channel Liggett's dramatic phrasing as though these events are historical. Or hysterical; whichever way you take this sort of delivery.
