I could see Visconti going for it, I think he'll get at least one stage, and he can do well on those last hilly stages in the 3rd week.
But it will probably go to a top 5 GC guy (i.e. Contador)

So, with the Giro fast approaching, who are the likely candidates for the red points jersey? Lots of MTF's to test their legs! :D

On this course, the same candidates as for GC. The Giro awards the same points for all stages and the climbing stages outnumber those suitable for sprinters (few of which will keep going into the third week anyway).

Maybe one of the guys that would otherwise be looking or a GC top ten like le Mevel or Carrara/Hoogerland, or maybe someone like Wegmann or a climbing sprinter could target it.

I suppose the race will decide, though.

I think Cunego became a GT contender again the moment he decided he was a classics specialist.

Story of his life. :D

No, I seriously don't know what's wrong with that guy. It's like he's all of a sudden clean and wasn't before. Never seen such an established cyclist plummet so much in his ability to do will in his races without anything happening to him.

Soler? But otherwise JROD, or maybe Scarponi?????

soler has been riding like crap since... forever.
Anyway I don't think he is racing.

The red will probably go to a contender, if not the winner.
This race is very hard, a lot of MTF and if the big guys don't give break aways much it will be difficult.

I assume the giro also rewards the last climb double points? I can't remember.

probably conta.
maybe scarponi, rujano, jrod, anton also.

I may not have a realistic idea of how it usually plays out. I'll check the roll of honour

Yeah, Rodiguez seems a decent bet.

I see it was taken by a sprinter in 2008: Bennati. Unlucky.

Maybe one non-GC rider apart from Visconti with a chance is Ventoso? He will be placing in the sprints anyway, and he's one of the best climbers among sprinters.

Look at the start list. Take out the GC contenders. Take out the sprinters. Put all over names in a hat. Draw one out.

About as much chance as predicting who'll win it.

I actually think a GC contender will have a reasonable chance of winning this

It's either going to a sprinter or GC contender that wins the Red.
