2011 Giro d'Itlalia

A Look Back

Hitch,

I gotta say, your OP contributions to this year’s Giro thread were incomparable. Forged by nothing less than a true love and passion for the sport, your opening work in the Stage 14 to Monte Zoncolan thread was particularly inspiring and, as it turned out, significant for reasons that couldn’t have been known at the time of its divine creation.
http://forum.cyclingnews.com/showthread.php?t=13542

With the canceling of the Crostis section, your thread beautifully and elegantly captured what “could have been.” The significance of that is only amplified with the recent rumblings of Zomegnan’s possible dismissal. If his days are truly numbered as race director, then it is all the more regrettable that his ultimate vision was never fully realized—it would’ve been a legendary ending to an epic run of race courses that he gave to the fans.

That vision is now preserved in your monumental OP, to be relived in our imaginations whenever the inspiration to do so may strike.
(It also needs to be mentioned that your profile of Jose Rujano was one for the ages.) :D

In deference to your stellar posts, I almost considered submitting to any avatar of your choosing, to be on display until the start of Le Tour...almost. :p

So, as the 2011 Giro winds down, it’s been quite a journey, made all the more fun and entertaining by your exceptional work along with many other outstanding contributions from several other forumites.

My hat is off to all of you...

I very much second that statement by Granville. Thanks to all those who invested the time to write some stage intro, and to Hitch in particular... There were some magnificent ones this year.

I know from last year that even writing a paragraph or two, if done well, can take much longer than one would realize

About the anthem issue, the Giro has apologised via twitter but the Spanish Sports Council has filed a formal complaint.

Sorry, I missed it. What was the issue there?

EDIT: Just looked back. They had the Republican lyrics there? Ouch..... That is a massive blunder.

So the Tour plays the Danish anthem, and now this?

They played the right anthem (the right notes) but with the 1928 lyrics, which where introduced by a dictator (Primo de Rivera) and used by another one (Franco). They are not official anymore and, like many people know, the Spanish anthem has no lyrics.

They played the republican anthem before the 2003 Davis Cup final in Australia, which was all the more hilarious because of the delivery. :D

The tribute to Wouter Weylandt on the canopy of the finish ramp sums the three weeks up perfectly and a fitting tribute to him.

Let me say LOL to this, BTW. But yes, eventually Kruijswijk held on.

To paraphrase a Dean Martin song, 'You're nobody till D_T dismisses your TTing abilities'

wow 15 whole seconds. amazing by sivtsov indeed ;)

cmon...
20 more seconds and he'd have the 9th place in the bag. "Not even a remote threat" doesn't seem quite correct.

Alberto getting 3rd in the final TT... and taking it easy... hahaha...
This Contador is waaaaaaay better than the 2009 version... How many "Verbiers" Did he give us? Well since "Verbier" is sooo 2009, I'll say since now "Etna" :p
and ufff... Alberto could have taken this final TT so easy... but I dont want to minimize Millar's ride... Long Time w/o having a nice MillarTime huh? ;)

Grande Alberto...! What a Giro!
