Contador is not the only rider in the race. Astana may sense Sky weakness. If they do, hey should put the hammer down in the last 30km today and try to tire out Porte's team mates for tomorrow. Movistar may spy the chance of mixing it up a bit by having Amador going on the attack in the final to put pressure on Aru, Porte and Contador.

Missing a day's racing, potentially a very important stage near the end of a tough week is silly. Contador might be complete toast, and might not be a factor at all in the Giro. Contador might be completely fine. Either way, you need to race the race, put your rivals under pressure if you can and play to your strengths and those of your team mates.

Uran might be coming into himself, and needs to start making time up. Should he not go for Aru today as Contador may or may not be in trouble?

Ah yeah I didn't mean they should get into the break. I just meant that there are some teams and riders who should be looking to make today hard. :)

But yeah, a strong headwind is a bit of a problem. I'm also afraid we get a weak break then when they are chased down in the finale we get a couple of half assed attacks in the headwind all closed down easily by Greenedge and then Matthews wins. It would be a waste of this stage if that happens, but I'm afraid it will. :(

I'd bet every single GT has been won when a contender has had to drop out, been delayed by a crash or impeded by an injury or illness.

You can't worry about what may be wrong with your opponent. If people went easy on rivals when they were suffering then you'd get people faking it to get an easier ride.

I don't think Astana or Sky will put pressure on Contador today. However, were they to do that, I wouldn't blame them. It's part of the game and you want to (need to, actually, at some point) take advantage of your opponent's weaknesses.

The last kilometer is not exceptionally hard, I guess Matthews stands a better chance than Gerrans.

I'm not sure of Lobato either - he hasn't been racing much in his build-up to the Giro and I think he might peak later on.

Disagree, Sky and Astana should attack Alberto with everything they have got today. It will make his eventual victory more glorious.

you must not forget that alberto also attacked andy schleck on the port de bales in the 2010 tour, after andy had a defect. So I could imagine that AC would give his best too if richie or fabio had an injury

That was only after Andy Schleck attacked Contador when Contador was held up in a crash. So Andy deserved it 100%.

On other occasions (like Sanchez) I remember Contador waiting.

Not that I think Aru shouldn't attack. The stages are there to be raced not neutralized. But the idea that Contador was in the wrong in 2010 was invented purely by Armstrong fans who monopolized the sport at the time who were still bitter about the fact that Contador didn't let Armstrong win in 2009. It had no basis in reality.

The sanchez one is a terrible example hitch since he was no threat to Contador, it's completely irrelevant.

Contador will never wait when it really counts. Just like Armstrong would have never done it (ullrich was no threat when he waited for him).
