I don't think you're fully grasping the meaning of "nothing to lose".
Surely the abundance of WT teams means that points are essential. Only understandable that Majka doesn't risk his position and potentially lower his market value.

He also said that the he expexct thing to happen near the top of this climb and in the descent right after.

If he can immediately drop chaves even 3 km from the top could be enough. He can get about 20 seconds on the lombarde, 10 on the descent and 20 on the last steep ascent. But since he doesnt know how strong chaves is he should definitely attack earlier.
