Why are Astana pulling instead of letting Sky do a little bit of work ? Unless of course Lopez is not feeling well but that won't help in the long run.

a) their fight isn't with Froome, it's with Carapaz and Pinot. Sky/Froome will let Lopez go should he attack on Cervinia.
b) this might tire some sky domestiques out anyway. people complain when the peloton just lets sky set the tempo, and they complain when they don't let sky dictate the pace

I don't know. There are still 70 k to go and the group is already relatively reduced. If sky was setting the tempo it would probably be slower

I honestly have no idea why Lopez or Astana would care about how many sky riders are still in the group. They'll care about fdj and movistar. Not everyone is riding against Froome and sky.

BTW, if people are wondering why Astana are pulling:

They are trying to isolate Pinot and Carapaz, so they are vulnerable on the last climb.

If he had the legs, he would still be there, but he only managed a couple of kms on the front
