Climate-wise, it would be much better to swap Giro and Vuelta: Vuelta raced in May avoids heat waves + the Pyrenees are not affected by snow as much as the Alps in this time of the year, and Giro raced in August/September will usually mean quite nice weather (some heat is possible, but less than in Spain), and no problems at all with high mountain passes/finishes getting cancelled.

The break will hope that the GC teams ride the next climb hard because this will drop the sprinters in the peleton and then of course GC teams will ride tempo.

I've suggested the same before, but I doubt the Vuelta would be willing to give up it's spot after the Tour.

If Spilak was still around this would be the GT for him, he'd unzip his jersey and put 3/4 of the peloton OTL. Still kinda sad that he didn't try riding the 2013 Giro, that one with it's horrible weather would have been perfect for him.
Indeed.

Now you've said it. Weird that of all grand tours, the 2013 Giro d'Italia has been the one where Betancur performed as expected!

Wasn't this how Caruso attacked 2021 when he ended on the podium? Started on a descent and then went ahead with Bilbao on the climb?
He was in second already going into stage 20 and went on a legendary long range attack with Bilbao and Bardet to try and win the giro from Bernal. Didn't work but he still came 2nd overall and won the stage. Great stuff from a great rider
