The question is how he'll do in week 3 and how he'll fare with hard mountain stages in succession. His recovery will be put to the test.
All big riders complain about the pink pressure!! You have to talk with media for extra 45 minutes, you have unwanted attention at hotel, bus, warm up, cool down.. In 3rd week all the extra everything likely to weigh on 21 year old Del Toro..

When Ayuso started out everyone said he was the new Pog. Now everyone says Del Toro is the new Pog. There's always a new Pog that isn't.
Ayuso is 22 and already an amazing rider that can compete for GT victories and has already won WT races.

Del Toro now has a major breakthrough being the strongest in a GT over the first 12 stages. Hè has also already done some ridicolously good races both as domestique and for himself.

They dont need the new Pogacar narrative as they are both extremely talented riders on their own that are challenging for the absolute top of mondial racing. But they should write their own stories without the references to other riders, no matter how the story unfolds.

In real life ,stuff $%!t happens and Pogacar is a little older, lots of close calls, crashes without serious side effects. UAE has good stable, with multiple early 20 something stallions. Del Toro has been going out of his way, including a few minutes ago to speak respectfully about teammates. He does have some details incorrect, keeps saying " older" riders and including Ayuso, who as you noted is a year older, hardly an elder statesman by any stretch.
So maybe it's just subconscious order that Del Toro feels slightly behind the others. No matter what order everyone is better as a whole, Pogacar is obvious beneficiary, he has best support in the business.
One thing that doesn't get much mention is how often, skinny Del Toro finds himself contesting sprints, and with Pidcock giving Pedersen a look in early stage, the fact that Del Toro squirted passed him is impressive. Don't know if his climbing or TTs are Pogacar comparable but his sprinting is decent.

His TT will never be as good as Pogacar IMHO. He doesn't have the ability to win TTs or be top5 consistently.

He came out of the womb 70 years old :p
He's always looked much older than he is, he sounds old, he's stoic and rarely cracks a smile... while I can imagine having a fun beer with Mads having one with Nairo would probably be a lot more quiet and awkward.

Happy he had a good day on the bike today though, he's not completely over the hill yet. :)

So a nice win by Carapaz and a bit of time gained in the GC. There was actually something going on on the last climb! Del Toro even tried, wow. He failed but surely looked strong and gained 6'' of bonus at the end. The race is very much on but unfortunately the remaining stages in the second week are so meh...

Call me paranoid but I believe Del Toro was trying to bait Rog so Ayuso could counter. It was all a bit too theatrical and overly performative IMO.

Like "look everyone I'm attacking hey Primož do you see this?"

Trek is racing absolutely fantastic!! Including a 3rd place today with ST sprint time.. And big factor was flatlander sacrifice!!
Pedersen absolutely smashing the pedals bringing break back!! Trek winning 40% of the stages so far and getting micro gain for Ciccone when there looked to be nothing there!!
Dumbest team award, in fact all podium places today goes to UAE!!
And if it's to be putting clowns in order, Yates, Ayuso, and McNulty all in hall of shame making Del Toro in pink pace himself, close gaps himself, attempt to jump across himself!! And the goon moves include burning Rafal Majka out of order, should have been Yates and McNulty used first , Majka( old man) doing long base pulls and pulling off after he explodes , should be different order!!
Del Toro may come up short skill for skill with Ayuso but he has 1000% more heart..3rd second place finish in this Giro, 2 being identical as he wins sprint while letting off gas!!

Micro-gain for Ciccone? he lost 16 seconds to Carapaz because of Lidl's tactics. And if they got the tactics right in stage nine they would have taken another minute from Roglic. They've been too greedy and forgot about their GC rider.
