It's definitely a portion of luck involved. But if you look at his save today and look at the fact that Del Torro seems to be attentive where Ayuso and Roglic regularly seem to be inattentive it's certainly some sort of quality as well.

Del Toro easily could have crashed and hurt himself today. Roglic and even Ayuso have a history of being inattentive or cautiousless positioned in the field.

FYI Del Toro did crashed and hurt himself today.

Congratulations to Kasper Asgreen for winning the stage from a breakaway.

Nice stage, especially enjoyed the Slovenian part, lovely crowd. The crash unfortunately ruined it for some, was looking forward to a stage win battle in between Rogla and Ciccone, due to Ciccone abandoning it will now be less fun. UAE now with at best two leaders remaining and all in all GC favourites still rather close so week three should be good.

Loving the drama so far! Not a dull stage until now in this Giro, really unpredictable as a real GT should be. The bad weather, the crazy streets, the crashes, the ambushes, now that's cycling at his best.

So MR. I'M TOO GOOD TO BE TADEJ DOMESTIQUE, you better get a grip on this GT cause we have the real BULL leading wonderfully!
Also Rogla please, take some riding lessons from Pedro Acosta or another Red Bull MOTOGP rider please...
Wait, what?

Didn’t see it live but watching the highlights - Del Toros time gain is not pure luck at all. Went down and had the instinct to see the importance of the situation and actively chased back to the front while others relied on their domestiques. Crashes obviously cam be bad luck but that was also well done.
I also have to wonder if seeing the Pink Jersey in the bunch, gave Visma the mental go-ahead to ride as hard as they did?

When they seen the yellow jersey, of Yates, that gave them wings. Hard to blame them, it's happening through the whole race, for example on stage 9 groups ahead pulled as hard as they could. Do remember some even bragging about it after. So don't expect much gifts on this race, no real respect involved.

What else do you need?
Close fight for GT, super crazy Mads, Wout back in business, crazy time trial, Ayuso mad, ridiculous circuits...
Different standards. This Giro has been bad, unfortunately for us, some teams (specially Ineos, Lidl) are trying to give us entertainment but the route sucks really bad. So Vegni is the one to blame. And don't forget you said we didn't have a dull stage until now. C'mon, we already had 5 or 6 stages without any significant action.

Brian Holm on Danish Eurosport saying he had a talk with Asgreen about how he dropped his two compatriots in the finale yesterday (which wasn't shown on the broadcast).

He said he was in front on the last descent but didn't gap them there, and he wanted to get away from them, because he didn't know either rider so didn't want a sprint to the line.

He explained when they hit the flat (he was still in front) he was thinking "I can't stand up, if they see me stand up they will react with an acceleration" - so he purposefully dropped the hammer sitting down through a corner, got 5 meters, then the same through a roundabout right after, still sitting down, pulled it out to 10 meters - and then he was gone.

Pretty cool insight into how the riders think on the fly

If you have Discovery+ / Eurosport you can watch the attack on the multiscreen feed. Very smart from him.
