Is it just me or are so many teams riding absolutely anonymous?

Like I haven't even seen a French team, completely forgot Jayco and Intermarché were even in this race.
Q36.5 gets mentioned only because Pidcock is riding but he's just being mentioned because he is Pidcock, hasn't done anything noteworthy.

Plapp won a stage and he was very active on stage 11 though.
Intermarche are bad, but without Girmay that's hardly a surprise.

To say Bernal's attacks are futile is myopic .... every attack puts pressure on a rival

For Bernal himself it may seem futile but after his crashes he probably knows he cant win ...so he is going all out just in case he gets away but also to test himself and bring the race to all

Maybe he wants to be the people champion :D

Looks like its between Carapaz , Yates and (let it be , let it be) Derek Gee

Unless Pellizari and Bernal can do a long one

Be interesting to see how Del Toro recovers after yesterday's stage. That may have been his one bad day.. The Mortirolo always has an effect on the top 10. Simon Yates will never be in a better position to win an elusive Giro after looking likely a few previous times. Expect to see another top 10 reshuffle. Bodies will still be fatigued from yesterday and the previous 2.5 weeks of racing. Thankfully an exciting GT for a change with multiple riders still in the hunt.

Not sure today was just a bad day for del Toro. It’s only the 2nd proper MTF and he lost quite a bit of time to his rivals. Big test coming up of his unproven recovery.

Agreed. Also this must have been del Toro's best climbing performance so far in his career, cracking or not. Maybe not on a singular mountain, but overall. Third week of a GT, 200+k, multiple mountains, 4737 vertical meters.
Doesn't have to be his ceiling on current form, but might be. His best result in last years Vuelta came after the restday in the third week. So it probably wasn't the restday either why he couldn't follow today.

Is this stage design really that bad? To me it looks pretty promising in terms of seeing action from far out.
I think this might be the best stage where we could see drama. If uae directors are as s*** as they were the whole giro i.e not sending a single rider in breakaway when all their rival teams had a satellite rider in the break this stage could end their dreams of podium b/c im sure Ef, ineos, israel, visma will send a rider in the break and full attack with their leaders on mortirolo and will finish the race of uae once they get to their satellite riders in the valley afterwards

This is one of those grand tours where the biggest favorites drop out for diverse reasons, which leads to a suspenseful final week. The guys who would normally be riding for a second or third place suddenly have a chance to win the Giro. Daniel Martinez has picked the wrong year to be good.

For me it's neither and the answer is more likely he was never the best pure climber in the race to begin with

I never said Del Toro was the best pure climber in the race but I think yesterday wasn't the best that he could produce either. Whether it was because of him cracking or the rest day or going into the red following Yates, we should find out in the next days.

Is the easy side of Mortirolo really enough to drop Del Toro if he is on the same level as yesterday? Yesterday's combination of Santa Barbara and the final climb was a whole different beast.

What was the reason for Gee to drop a minute in the first stage?
It may prove to be the difference between podium or even winning and not.

You don't start everyday at 100% again. Accumulation of racing for 16 days already will also have his effect. Depending on how hard they go, he can be dropped. Problem is that the other teams don't have the riders for it, so GC riders might need to do it themselves.

I might be overly optimistic, but I expect fireworks from Red Bull, EF and Ineos today. Maybe even Israel, put Fuglsang in the break.

That has sadly been a feature of their season. Foss has also had some fliers in Paris-Nice and the one with Jungels in LBL.

There is room for improvement with their offensive tactics, though it has been much better in the Giro where sheer bad luck prevented a great coup on the gravel stage (and no, it's not freaking Lucas Hamilton's crash that was the brilliant tactic that day) but Bernal has probably been a bit too optimistic at times.
Futile for sure but can’t think of any occasions where sitting in and waiting for the key moments with all the favourites would have had better odds for a good outcome for Ineos this year.
