No, Carapaz was leading most of the mountain, he just couldn't close the gap and, even though he tried like 10 times, just couldn't loose del Toro.
If you are talking about after the climb, I maintain that they probaby were just to cooked to do anything. Do you really think they are letting this happen because they are idiots? Loosing *** 6 minutes?
No, they lost the first minute or so by being idiots, the second by Yates being stronger than them, and then the other four by giving up.

Am I the only one who doesn’t think Del Toro had more energy for Finestre? He looked dead on his feet to me, I’m pretty sure the argument is because Carapaz refused to pull afterwards, at which point the race was over with Van Aert pulling for Yates
The way he was frequently chasing Carapaz by a bike length and the manner in which he sat back down in the saddle after standing for a bit indeed suggests there wasnt much more in the tank. But especially when you don't have much more to give it might be better to not play games and just ride your tempo earlier after Yates left, and Van Aert or no Van Aert you should at least try on the descent and Sestriere because now you don't know if you would've failed.

Expensive lessons. I haven't been this bummed from cycling in a long time. His demeanor in interviews suggests he's a very analytical no-nonsense guy so he will be mulling this over for some time to come.

I mean, Carapaz had only 30s on Yates...the guy went off alone halfway up the climb, you know there's WVA in front and a decisive false flat...and you let him go like that. uh.maybe Yates wasn't so dominant, but in the last 2 kms of the Finestre , Carapaz and Del Toro pushed hard and recovered very few seconds
Once Yates was gone, Carapaz and Del Toro almost caught him back again after Carapaz attacked. As Del Toro was following him, he cut his effort. But they could clearly have caught him then

Overall, Yates made a much steadier effort than Carapaz the whole climb, it doesn't shock me that Carapaz was not able to gain much time in the end of the climb while at the same time not wanting to push 100% as Del Toro was in his wheel.

Who's they for the first minute though? It's not that Carapaz didn't put in efforts to get back to Yates, just didn't work. You can say del Toro was being an idiot, but I disagree about Carapaz at that point. If anything he attacked to much and should've gone up a more steady pace, but than again that's not exactly his style.
