ondition? A Giro stage with Sampeyre, Fauniera and Madonna di Colletto to Borgo San Dalmazzo in the future woul
Imagine a stage like this (or at least the three last climbs) as the last big mountain stage!

In the giro ng 2022 there was a stage with finish on Fauniera (Pradleves side) and it was an unipuerto . I remember that these climbs (Sampeyre Fauniera Esischie) have been forgotten by the giro because they have poor maintenance and the descents are extremely technical and are also considered dangerous.

In earlier versions of the Granfondo Fausto Coppi it also seems that they climbed from Pradleves, descended on the south side and then climbed Madonna di Colletto. This year it seems they did a new route with Sampeyre and Fauniera from Ponte Marmora. That is one of the potentially most interesting Giro stages possible.

I was looking at Cyclosportives now. For 2025 I see that the Granfondo la Fausto Coppi did include both Sampeyre and Fauniera this year. Sampeyre has been used only twice in the Giro and last time in 2003.

The later years I have understood that Sampeyre (and Fauniera) has not been used due to poor road condition? If they do a cyclosportive over Sampeyre and Fauniera north. Does that mean it has been repaved and now are in better condition? A Giro stage with Sampeyre, Fauniera and Madonna di Colletto to Borgo San Dalmazzo in the future would be epic! @Eshnar or @Mayomaniac, do you know something about this?
RCS are too scared to descend off the Muro di Sormano, these no chance they'll use Sampeyre and Fauniera anytime soon.

Even if those climbs are repaved also on the descent? I would be strange if they were safe enough to do in a cyclosportive but not in a World Tour race.....

Unsurprisingly, I favour the design I've used before (first climb should be skipped for a realistic design):

Fauniera is such a monster but for the race to explode there this should be the final stage with some riders having little to lose. Madonna del Colletto may be just hard enough to make the riders wait for it to attack.

MdC after Fauniera is non negotiable. And I think Fauniera attacks may be more likely if the stage is slightly easier before.

I agree with @Netserk that Fauniera should be from Pradleves, that side is way harder than from Ponte Mormora.

I don't think Sampeyres serves that much purpose in this design anyway.

I know, Fauniera from Pradleves includes about 16 km @ 9%, quite a beast (avg. grade doesn't do it justice, just like in case of MtVentoux when listed at 21 km). One of the hardest GT climbs ever, only Finestre has a longer 9%+ section. Still, the steep MdC plus flattish 18 km section at the end make it quite a long struggle afterwards.

Flat finale just maenas you have to crack the race open earlier.

It can and will work as the last mountain stage. Like Finestre, you don't even need fresh doms to launch you, just make it count from the bottom.
