For those in Aus, the Giro is live on Foxtel from 10pm most nights I think. Eurosport UK is now part of the Foxtel 'Sports' package - it is a must. I think SBS are also going to be putting the Tour of Cal on live which means TV in the office in the morning!
Saw that last night - Ive got Fox and it is the best thing ive ever done.........I get it for all the sports (and some cartoons LOL:p)

I cannot believe that this would be the case. IMO most Australians whether casual or otherwise would rather see one of their own vying for victory rather than LA in some other obscure race. Casual US fans maybe but not Oz. It's probably just a shortsighted decision by someone without much of a clue or something budgetary involving a package as someone else pointed out. Probably didn't want to fork out additionally for the Giro although curiously they are showing highlights.
I can as this isnt the first time.... SBS were due to show the 07 Paris - Roubaix till two weeks before it start and decided in their wisdom to show highlights the next week.

And its not just SBS - Free to Air Stations treat sports fans like idiots 99% of the time. In Adelaide, an AFL mad city they dont even show the Friday night game live. And lets not go there with other sports as well!

I don't have foxtel so I have to rely on sbs.
bummer :(

Try either myp2p.eu or Justin TV on the net around race time - with the big races you will be OK smaller races its harder to find stuff

Does anyone know if they will be covering it for free this year, and if so, what the difference is with the "premium"? Can't tell at all from their site.

You'll have to pay to watch on universal. But I'm sure that cyclingfans.com will have links to free streams worldwide as usual. They did last year.

So far I'm very pleased with Universal's Giro coverage.

I had no problems connecting or losing connections in watching the archived versions of stage 1 and stage 2. The video quality was excellent and they showed the race when the regular TV version cut away for commercial.

This is so much better than chasing free video links with poor video quality. And you can watch it at any time.

I'm very disappointed Universal Sports doesn't seem to be free this year. I don't quite understand the decision, since anybody that wants it badly enough will find a live link on the internet somewhere.

The worst case is a foreign language video link with sound muted, and the Eurosport English audio. However, this is still better than paying for it.

I find it hard to believe they think they will make more from PPV rather than providing a free internet broadcast and selling commercials during the show.

Even harder to believe that somebody would $14.99 for something that is free just a few clicks away.

And since it is live during US working hours, a lot people are just going watch the replays on their TV's when they get home from work.

I wish somebody from Universal Sports would come on here and explain it all.

I bit the bullet and paid the $14.99. Of course it would've been great if it was free again but I really don't mind paying $0.72 per stage. If you look at it that way, you get two to three hours of commercial free coverage of every stage for less than $1.00 US. Personally I think it's a bargain.

Also, in response to the bolded portion; not everyone has Universal Sports broadcast by their cable/satelite provider, so not everyone can watch the Giro on TV. At least I know I can't as I have DirecTV.

I'm what the U.S. press refer to as a "99 weeker", meaning my unemployment benefits have run out and there's no income from anywhere. I can, and have, eaten for a week on fifteen bucks, and I'm doing that now instead of paying to watch the race.

I'm also on the Universal Sports mailing list, and in their e-mails about the Giro, and at there website, there was no mention of a fee until maybe a day before the race. I knew they had charged for people to watch the Boston Marathon, but it's bad business to let people think for weeks that they can see something for free, and then announce a fee when they show up to watch.

For some people it was a minor glitch, but for people like me, well, I deleted their bookmark and have no reason to ever go back there. I'm also the kind of guy who's grateful for things when I'm down on my luck, so if they had let me watch the Giro free as I was led to believe, I would have been loyal to them when I got back on my feet. They make a lot of really poor decisions, their website only works on one type of browser on any given day (Silverlight won't load from there on IE8, and I'm pretty sure I already had Silverlight anyway. Videos never load in IE, and even though they corrected it after complaints during the Vuelta by hiding the winner near the On Demand button, they still screw it up now. They should get much better at what they do before charging for it. Luckily, I still have a great race feed to watch every day.

Do you have a link that works (in America) for Eurosport UK audio? I used to listen to them for all the races, but the link rarely works this season. Cheers

I am not going to comment on your lack of employment, but those of us who work regular hours do not have the luxury of trying to track down a live feed of the race, nor particularly the desire to watch the race on such a poor resolution.

Being able to watch the Giro later in the day, on a resolution that looks good at a full-screen level, for pennies a day is a great value to me.

Perhaps that's because I can only compare Universal to cycling.tv, which was horribly unreliable for past Giros, but I love the service and consider it a bargain. There have been no technical issues for me, there are no spoilers on the Web site and no video drop-outs.

Considering that cycling.tv charged a lot more for the giro (which at times was impossible to watch) I'm very happy.

Universal paid a lot for the rights to the Giro, and it costs money to provide on-demand and live video on the Web. It's only fair they get some modest compensation.

I hope your personal situation works itself out.

Early in the season the ES link at steephill and cyclingfans wasn't working but it seemed ok for PR, Ronde, Amstel, LBL.

Is it not working for the Giro? I've been to busy this week at work to even try it.

We've got to get this figured by the time the race goes up.

Watching the classics I found the Eurosport audio worked in Internet Explorer but not Mozilla Firefox.

is this now the curse of geo-restricted?
