that's because the evans fans react so strongly when someone says something like that. people are just trying to get a rise out of them. if there were basso fans on here who would get angry at him being called a wheelsucker im sure he would have been as well

you're really being overly sensitive. on the contrary, i think evans has gained new respect from a lot of people here this year.

Do you just want to see people hating him? Everyone here will confirm what I said. I think you just like him to be the one picked on so you can continue your crybaby act.

no people purposefully hate riders because they need someone to bash so they can look like experts and it comforts there ego. Evans is an easy target which makes the bashers very cowardly and sad as it just gets old.

Come on, stop with this. Basso was perfectly in the right for not doing any work to chase down Nibali. How can Basso be accused of 'wheelsucking' when his goal isn't to win the stage since his teammate will?

This is rediculous. If you have a teammate up the road you do not chase. Basso did not chase and should not have chased. He did the right thing for his teammate.
I support Evans and I am an Aussie. It would please me greatly to see Evans win the Giro.

Sportzchick I have to admit some of the things you post don't contribute a lot to put in a politik way..

but Hey Bro, the personal arrogant put downs you and others dish out in response are simply WAY more trashy and interruptive of a good forum read IMHP.

EDIT: maybe not 'WAY', but then whatever I suppose. It is the internet after all. The lowest common demonominator of humanity.

ACF, I know you are a devoted and passionate Cadel fan, but please understand that looking at the world through Cadel-tinted glasses affects your perspective on things.

I've seen evans receive a lot of praise lately, and has had a lot of neutral fans supporting him also. I don't think he has copped any unfair criticism this giro.
Pretty much BMC has been criticized a lot, but rightly so, they have sucked.

You and sportschick are being really over-sensitive.

Funny stuff. I hope Cuddles recovers well tonight. It's going to be a tough day at the office tomorrow. Oh and Vino is going to get shelled tomorrow.

 - no, i am taken

i agree timmy that evans has received a lot of praise on the forum this year but I was making my comments as more a generalised comment and not really reffering to sportschicks wheelsucking comments.

Come on people. I think Basso actually got the biggest grilling of the stage, hassled about his hopeless decending record and the "shock" everyone expressed when he won a sprint against two riders who'd been doing all the work for 40kms. Stop defending Cadel until someone actually says something worth defending against.

For the record, picking on HWSNBN is this forum's number one pass time. It's just a pity Retirement-Shack wasn't able to justify a Giro invite.

It is one thing to be have gaps in your knowledge. It is a different thing to refuse to acknowledge those gaps. And it is a completely different thing to sarcastically bash everyone who is trying to helpfully explain the situation. It is revelling in stupidity. Eventually people get fed up with the stpid arrogance.

This board at one point posted a dedicated summary disproving the myth that Evans is a wheelsucker.

Sportzchick is getting a bit of stick because she's ignored the totally valid tactical reason that Basso was allowed to sit on, because Evans has had some stick for it in the past.

For the sake of simplicity, sportzchick:

Cycling is a team sport in many respects. Liquigas, because they have two GC candidates, were in the strongest position. If Nibali is attacking, Basso has no reason to work because he wants to help his teammate win (if he can't win). That means that, if Scarponi and Evans pulled Nibali back, Basso would then attack, and Nibali would follow the other two, because he'd be able to say "if I can't win (and my attack failed), then I want my team to win, so I won't chase Basso".

The reason Evans took a lot of stick for 'wheelsucking' in the past is that he never had the benefit of a strong teammate in a threatening position that other teams needed to chase. As a result, if he wasn't working, they wouldn't rationalise it as doing his job for his team. Either you're on the back because you're on the rivet (and sometimes he was) or you're not working because you simply don't want to (see the stick José Serpa Pérez ["sucka Serpa"] has got in April in the Coppi e Bartali and Giro del Trentino threads for evidence of somebody not called Evans getting stick for wheelsucking in this situation).

The other thing is, this forum has a lot of Evans fans who get quite exaggeratedly emotional about any criticism of their hero. Evans is a great rider, but a lot of the reason he hasn't yet got the palmarès that his abilities would merit has been as much down to him as anything else. Some people on this board can criticise Evans from rational points of view (and will praise him up when he does something good). But as long as you get so exaggeratedly upset by criticism of him, then you can expect to be goaded about it.
