Think he thought J-Rod or Gadret (or Nibbles) might catch Tiralongo at the line, so he went out there and dragged him to the finish.

Oh, also it was 3 more mountain points - Contador may be eying up the Grand Slam.

Perhaps to keep the KOM jersey hopes. And, on the other hand, many people complain when the leader just wheelsuck stage after stage, so every man to his taste.
