In theory, they wouldn't even need to make it to the Mortirolo or Gavia - Lloyd has 29 points, and you could take 15 today, then 18 tomorrow, and overhaul him. However, Lloyd is bound to break away on one of the two days, plus Basso (25), Evans (25), Turpin (20), Scarponi (17), Garzelli (17), Tondó (16), Bertogliatti (16), Stortoni (16) and Chris Anker Sørensen (15) are all within striking distance. On the stage with the huge breakaway Lloyd was dropped and was struggling, and so Bakelandts and de Greef had to keep Tondó away from the mountains points for him (Tondó might be ruing not going for them on the first climb of the day, otherwise it'd be a turnaround of 12 (+8 for Tondó who was 4th = 2 points, -4 for Lloyd who was 1st=10 points), Lloyd would have 25 and Tondó 24). I expect to see one of Tondó or Garzelli in the break either today or tomorrow in the aim of overhauling that gap, and Stortoni and Sørensen wouldn't be much of a stretch of the imagination either. Basso and Evans will inevitably pick up points because they'll come near the top of the stages.

Just as I say that, an attack goes. In it: Failli, Rodríguez, Krivtsov, Duque, Bonnet, Bakelants, Samoilau and Tondó.

Tondó will be after the points, Bakelants will be after stopping him.

I think a GC rider will have the KOM after today (Basso and Evans 9 points ahead of Tondó, if one of them is first over the Mortirolo they go to 35, if Tondó takes everything before then he can only make it to 31... he'll have to hope that the GC contenders let somebody random attack them on Mortirolo, or hope to hang in with them himself; Garzelli will perhaps be the one to attack, after the points himself). Then Tondó and Garzelli will be in the break tomorrow and the Gavia will be decisive.

Does the fact that the stage doesn't finish at the summit of the Mortirolo take away some of it's relevance. Think Tourmalet TDF09.
I guess Nibali or Vino could keep a gap on the descent but Cuddles and Basso both lack that kamikaze style. Could Arroyo creep back on the descent if he risks his ability to walk, and feed on solid food?

2006 - Mortirolo, then Aprica. Four riders ahead of the rest at over 7 minutes back on the winner.

2004 - was first climb of the day.

1999 - stage finished on Aprica after Mortirolo.

1997 - stage finished in Edolo, end of the descent from Mortirolo

1996 - stage finished on Aprica after Mortirolo.

1994 - stage finished on Aprica after Mortirolo.

1991 - stage finished on Aprica after Mortirolo.

1990 - stage finished on Aprica after Mortirolo.

ORE 9.40 organizers keep constantly monitored the Gavia Pass (m. 2618), included in tomorrow's stage, which raises some concerns, especially for possible damages that forecast snowfall at high altitude. At the moment, is not made any official announcement of a possible change of course in any case is already drawn. The alternative route in case of worsening weather, always provides the departure from Bormio, after the turning point with the ascent of Trivigno Tirano (traveled down the day before) to continue to Aprica, and then, still descending on Tirano reach Grosio to address the Mortirolo from the north - west, new for the Tour of Italy. A 3 km from the summit, the road rejoins the "Classic Mortirolo. Then down to Monno challenging to deal finally climb that leads to the arrival of Ponte di Legno / Tonale.
