Given some of the things HTC have pulled over time, they really ought to be able to take getting the rough treatment themselves a bit better.

Seriously, they won the first stage, they've got the maglia rosa, what more do they want?

Not sure what relevance the bike length pettachi got was - the only time he rode in a straight line for 50 yards Cav closed it right up.

It won't be overturned, but people claiming it was completely fair really need to tone down their irrational Cav hatred.

He's always angry, when he doesn't win. He was in perfect position and he had the speed but he slept and went to late.

Imagine if someone had did that to petacchi, ale jet would have tried to kill them, he hit some guy in turkey for less :S.. But he is still my favourite sprinter so I forgive him.

The brat in Cav surfaces once more.

And he wonders why people don't like him.

Anybody would have complained there had that happened to them, just because Cav has some people will be wetting their knickers... And I am no Cav fan boy.

Don't care much for Cav but if he had just done what Ale-Jet had done plenty would be complaining.

I highly doubt that. Nothing serious happened in that spring except Cav launching his spring too late and then not knowing which way to go. Cav had room to move all the time, there was still space between the barriers and Petacchi.

If you think that this is was an 'irregular' sprint than you're the irrational one. There's no obligation to 'stick to your line' or anything. Its perfectly fair, smart sprinting.

When you run someone into the barricades, or risk doing so, then there's a case.

In a legitimate sprint you're not obliged to just open the way up for your rival.

Perhaps Cav thinks he's owed that. Cav was out-foxed, not commited an injustice.

Nice sprint. Cavendish appeared to have trouble making a decision; when to go and when Petacchi went, on what side to pass him. I doubt his complaint will be taken seriously.

So far the giro is an all Italian affair ;)

Yeah, I'm no Cavboy, but Petacchi very knowingly shut down his line and in doing so, didn't exactly hold a straight line..............to say the least.
However, this is Italy.

I don't hate Cav but there was not much wrong there.

Where was Farrar lol ? After this lead-out.

Yeah, Garmin went under the flamme rouge with four men on the front, I thought they had it locked up but they couldn't hold it.

I'm not going to get mixed up in another Cav-related ****storm. I've seen guys get relegated for less than what we saw today, but I've also seen worse go unpunished. I think a lot of people here would be singing a very different tune if Cav and Ale's positions were reversed in this sprint, but whatever.

Cycling news live report says they have confirmation petacchi will keep the win...

It wasn't especially bad, cavendish has a right to be annoyed, but I think this is part of road sprinting....

No Kristoff?

Kristoff was 11th.

Still a long way away from that first professional victory.

It wasn't completely fair.

But it was just fair enough to (probably) get away with it. That's the benefit of experience there - "never outrun what you can outwit".

I watched it on Universal Sports in the U.S. and the announcers love anything connected to US cycling, so they love Cav for riding on an American team. However, even they felt that Cav didn't have a beef about the sprint.
