Giro d'Italia Stage 8: Chianciano - Monte Terminillo (189km)

Page 5 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
If Basso and Nibali had been riding on different teams then Nibali would have finished with Scarponi and Basso would have finished with Kiserlovski (at best). Trouble with Basso is he's never been the toughest mentally - he can really fall apart when things don't go his way

I think Liquigas were right to make Nibali wait though - it's better to keep two riders in contention at this stage. Today will also be tough for Basso but if he can get through with minimal losses then he could emerge as a bigger contender than Nibali later on. It will be a completely different race in the final week to what we've had so far - I'd expect to see a hugely different GC in a couple of weeks time

It is currently 13C and rain in Rieti. On top of Terminillo (200 meters above the finish) it is 2C.

It is going to be a cold day on the mountain.

I have raced up Monte Terminillo 3 times and ridden up 3 more. The Leonessa side, which they are not racing up, is harder than the Rieti side they are.

Once when I raced up it it was sunny at the bottom and like 20° c., but when we got to the top it was howling windy 3° c. and hailing and you could bairly stay on the bike. That was in July.

The Giro contenders, if the weather is as bad as is predicted on Terminillo, are in for a trying finish. And with yesterday's conditions some will be indeed lucky if they aren't sick by this evening.

thanks. yes it was a joke, may be not a very funny one - an allusion to race radio normally accessible from team cars.

Either the joke wasn't that funny, or maybe I'm just slow....or maybe both reasons are valid;)

On topic: Should be interesting to see which major name is left behind... There must be someone, as the gap increases that much, implies some strong team involvement in front...

Radiocorsa says it is one of the crappier Masciarellis, Andrea, not Francesco.

That would make more sense, since Andrea has been hurting since his crash.

On the other hand, Francesco has been awful and finished way behind most days.

Today from images at the top, it looked like it was snowing/sleeting a little.

After yesterday, I don't know how many contenders really want to kill themselves again today.

Breakaway?
