Well what was going to be an intriguing contest for the next 2 weeks has been ruined by the Comms and is a foregone conclusion, shame really.
This race is, and probably always has been, Contador vs Aru. Game on.

Aru will ship loads of time in the TT and make up none in the Mountains. Porte was Contador's most likely rival.
And Porte would have had at least one bad day and given minutes up there. Astana and Aru are strong and will make the race.

This "Mategate" might actually have a good impact on the race because Richie was the only one of the top three that, at least on paper, could afford to play it conservatively in the mountains. Not anymore.

So in a way, this makes the podium fight even more intense assuming Porte and Aru are on even time or thereabouts after the ITT and Contador is only a minute or more ahead of them both. Assume Uran makes up his 2' on Contador and frankly we have a great 3rd week ahead of us.

Ha! I'll raise you this: Aru somehow, somewhere to gain 1-2 minute(s) on Bert befor the TT and than it's safe to say that the big bad 60K is almost nullified. :D

A way to accomodate some peloton-justice would be if, let's say, the rest of the top 10 GC-rides swop their Wheels too tomorrow.

The whole peleton, right when the flag waves. They all stop and swap wheels with the person next to them. This would be brilliant.

...and the jury being as strict as demonstrated will penalize all of the peloton with 2 minutes bar Richie & Clarke who, this being their second offense, will have 10 minutes docked. :D

Concerning Clarke’s decision to help Porte out itself, Brailsford argued that “It’s a shame that people can’t see the sense of it, really most people will watch that and most people will think that actually it’s a fair gesture, he didn’t gain any unfair advantage.

Not a shred of "We blew it. It's a well-known rule and neither Ritchie not the team had a clue. Totally our fault."

Weak sauce.

I bet the OGE sponsors are mad.

What would have been great publicity shots of them being associated with a sporting gesture, has blown up.

Someone remind me. What is the maximum allowable iq for being a cycling journalist. Was it 50 or 55?

Would be funny to see them trying to convince Astana.
LOL. See Quintana's reaction last year. And he's way closer to Uran than Contador or Aru to Porte (Unzue isn't Mary Poppins but nowhere near as cut-throat as Vino either).

They can give Porte a 2 minute head start at the stage start ;)

Also Brailsford not noting, actually there arguably IS an unfair advantage, since he didn't have to take a teammate's wheel therefore that teammate (who the photos show was standing there) could assist in the chase.

Matthews helped chase back on, so if he loses another few seconds taking a teammate's wheel, Clarke will surely help out the chase and there's little difference - and Clarke then has the plausible deniability that Matthews is his team's sprinter so he wants to bring him back to contend for the victory.

Of course, hindsight is always 20-20, and with the adrenaline going it's hardly surprising if that didn't occur to them.

Sky tweeting the hashtag #SupportPorte?

Isn't that what they should have done, you know, with all the teammates, team cars, spares and mechanics?

Actually, I didn't see a single reaction from any professional cyclist saying that this penalty is justified. And I am pretty sure they know more about cycling, fair play, process of thought at those moments, etc. than all of us combined.

Don't be so naive. Few people would openly say that. Maybe Tinkov, few others. Astana, Tinkoff-Saxo and Etixx are all happy with the decision.

This comment wins the thread.

Someone should tell Sky this on twitter.

Well, if they think this is right then why would they be afraid to say that. Everybody knows its not justified, it doesnt mean they arent happy about it

iirc this guy was a big Lance defender before he recently became a devout skybot. Nothing to see there.
TBF iirc Neal Rogers was one of the more open minded journos after Bonsacre and Ventoux saying Sky do have questions to answer.

Yeah, Rogers has been pretty good. Not with him on this one, though.
