Do you follow football at all? Every time a big name player transfers it's all about opportunity and ambition, according to the player, never about the money. But everyone knows it's all about the money.

This isn't a criticism. I think it's what they should do (within reason).

Of course money had a lot to do with it as well but I doubt EBH would have stayed even if Columbia had had more cash to throw at him.

Maybe, maybe not. But this is these guys' living, so if someone offers a huge pay rise - then, assuming it's from a credible outfit, then all other considerations generally go out the window. We may like to think that their primary consideration is their palmares, but it's not, it's money (quite rightly - at 35-40 they're unemployed with no qualifications).

I follow football well enough to be able to think of 10+ reasons why the transfers in the two sports aren't really comparable. I think people get too caught up in this notion of 'the wage' being the most important thing. I'm not convinced it is for well advised sportsmen with more than a handful of brain cells. I.e. not most British Footballers.

There are a number of benefits, some financial, some not, for Cavendish to ride for Sky, that could dwarf any wage differential that HTC could offer.

I think it's a bit early for that kind of hype, but he certainly looked a class act today. He should win a lot of races this year and have a great chance at Worlds.

Well, Cav might leave for Sky but I'm fairly certain that Goss will be high on the list for GreenEdge as well. With the amount of points Goss will be worth they will probably reach very very deep in their pockets to sign him in order to have a better shot at getting a PT license.

The amount Green Edge and Sky can offer, HTC can only afford to keep one of them (and there's a small chance both will go). THR, as a team dominated by sprinters for 2-3years, you would think needs to have at least one top5 sprinter in its ranks. Howard/Degenkolb are not at that level (yet).

I don't think Goss or Cav have a problem staying on the same team. The only difference between them would be Goss wanting a crack at the TdF. At the moment, I'd say Cav stays and Goss goes to Green Edge.

Well, with the ease they seem to find and recruit great talents I doubt they would hurt too much even if they lost both of them. Howards and Degenkolb could certainly keep them afloat for a year while they find the next great thing.

What a ridiculous comment. Some people have very short memories it seems.

I know I exegerate but I do that on purpose to evoke a discussion. of course I really hate cavendish so don't take me to serious in this in many ways I really hope his career ends in sheer misery.

Nice win by Goss-no doubt about it-Renshaw is rising up too.....................but:
who's the rider winning the most stages in the Tour currently?

PS: when Cav's ability to win stages starts to diminish is when Stepleton will gladly let him go-not before;)

Well, he will probably try to keep Cav but it's a good chance he might not have the finances to pull it off and then he would have to rely on the loyalty of Cavendish and from what Cav has said in interviews the last year it doesn't feel like he would stick with HTC through thick and thin no matter what. If the money is on the table and they can ensure at least some good support which Sky certainly can then he's probably gone.

Last year it was the teeth. Whats the excuse this year?
Cavendish is a big talent but also a enfant terrible and it always will damage himself. He can do a great Tour, a great Vuelta or won the World Championship but I think he can't do a season without fails/problems.

I think Cavendish (in his peak) is better than Goss, but if Goss get important victories this year and Sky pay, HTC can release Cav to Sky.

When Cav's contract ends?

Both Goss and Cavs contracts end this year hence all the speculation.

Also be important when Wiggins's contract ends because Wiggins might have a good contract and might be expensive sign with Cavendish and 2 or 3 teammates that he wants.

I don't know how much money Sky have free to manage :p

I think Wiggins signed something like a 3 or 4 year deal so he has some time left of his contract. I would guess that if Sky needs money to sign Cav then they money could be easily found. Sky doesn't strike me as a frugal sponsor.

My thoughts, exactly!

One can only wonder what terrible wrong Cavendish visited on this wretched soul to deserve such vitriol....

On one hand Sky TV are looking to cut their marketing budget.

But on the other hand, they made £855m profit last year, and the Murdochs will soon have full ownership - and James Murdoch is the prime mover behind Team Sky.

"Piva and the other HTC-Highroad directeurs sportifs have been working with Goss since he joined the team from CSC in 2010. He showed his potential during his two seasons with Bjarne Riis, but HTC helped him to emerge and show his full potential."

HTC have shown a great knack for knowing which talents to cherrypick from other people's development programs.

Recently they've been happy to let some very talented riders walk (Ciolek, Greipel, Boasson Hagen, Lövkvist) because they've been more interested in keeping the golden egg that is Cavendish - Greipel and Ciolek are very good sprinters, but they don't exactly add a different dimension that Cavendish doesn't already do better; Lövkvist, well, the team have shown time and time again that they don't care about non-sprinters except as leadouts, most notably asking somebody on the GC podium of a Grand Tour to do a turn in the leadout train. But that they let EBH walk is a bit more surprising. Goss appears to have similar upside to EBH but be more of a sprinter, so it could be interesting to see if HTC are willing to nail their Cav colours to the mast again or if there are some difficult decisions to be made by Stapleton.
