Another difference with a serious hilly race is that Tony Martin can win it ;)
yeah but that was becvause of the horrid rain and terrible conditions so most of the field gave up. That's like KBK 2010 so Traksel could win

This is true, I'm ecstatic about Ion's GT debut this May, but he has proved that he is not utterly useless (but rather adept) on the cobbles like most of his other teammates.

Maybe it comes from years of tailing his older brother on his preferred terrain?

Plenty of time as a junior spent as a 'crosser (sure, others like Beñat Intxausti have 'cross experience - looking beyond the Basques also Paco Ventoso and David Arroyo have), but unlike most of his other teammates who've done a bit of that Ion actually has the size and strength to get the power down on the cobbles.

I've always wondered why Euskaltel don't give some of the cyclocross guys like Egoitz Murgoitio and Javi Ruíz de Larrinaga or some of the other Hirumet riders a short term contract; they might not exactly be about to set the world on fire in the cobbled races, but they're much more likely to adapt to them than most of the Euskaltel riders.

This is a good race. Look forward to it.

Euskaltel obviously has no interest in doing well on the cobbles. They couldn't care less.

As for tomorrow...

I really like this race. It's always special to have the pros ride on the roads you know so well. Not a single metre of flat terrain, although none of the hills are hard by themselves (except for the last one).

In which case, hiring a couple of 'cross guys would mean fewer of their main road squad having to make the trip, and can be deployed in races better suited to them.

They care so little they're not even going to bother to do that extra paperwork when they can just send their squad filler.

I hope one of Costa/ Moser can win this for my CQ team. I think Nocentini has a great chance here ( he shall be my pick ).

It´s a pity that Izaguirre brothers are not in De Ronde...

I was coming for this. He's in the form of his life, it's one of his favourite races and he was best team rider here last year. But still, outsprinting guys like Samu, Purito or Wegmann is highly unlikely.

With 20km to go, the bunch is together, having sucked in the break of the day, consisting of Julián Sánchez Pimienta (Caja Rural) and Pascual Orengo (Burgos BH) Cano of Andalucía and Orbe of Orbea were in the break earlier, but were dropped by the former pair on one of the climbs.

Most of the bunch pacing has been done by Euskaltel and Katyusha.

A new attack consisting of José Herrada (Movistar), Ángel Vicioso (Katyusha) and Carlos Barbero (Orbea) has got away, Movistar and Katyusha looking to put the pressure on Euskaltel to chase I expect.

Movistar confirm it's Herrada. He and Vicioso have dropped Barbero and have 18" on the group on the Alto de Eraul. Garmin now taking up the pacing work, and putting Castroviejo and Cobo out the back.

It's pretty spectacular at least. My veeeeery basic Spanish can't quite follow this - damn, they're fast talking. Yadayadayada...Rui Costa...yadayada...Sorensen Saxo Bank. What happened to Herrada and Vicioso?
