Oh my Lord

Christchurch mom of two dead on a spot she travelled "hundreds of times".

05:00 06/11/2010 | "She's come off on a very steep curve on that road and skidded across the road," Detective Sergeant Earle Borrell said. In tears her husband Ian Holmes said his wife had cycled around the corner where she died hundreds of times and was a strong downhill rider.

"She was a great person. She cycled to work most days and did this particular route most days. It's quite unbelievable, actually," he said.

"She was a unique individual. She has strengths in a lot of areas. She was developing in later life. She had recently taken up art and she was thriving [in work]. She was really starting to make a mark in her management role."

CDHB public health unit general manager Evon Currie paid tribute to her friend.

"She was the most amazingly passionate woman, [both] about public health and living," she said.

"She was full of energy and enthusiasm. She was a very keen biker and wanted to make the world a better place for everyone to live in."

She was "so proud of her family and committed to them".

"She was also very popular with staff. She always created an environment where people knew she cared." [http://stuff.co.nz]

2 North Slope Cyclists Dodge Death in Accidents on Sunday & Monday

Wed, Nov 10, 2010 at 10:03 AM | The message is clear: when biking through the North Slope/Flatbush deathzone, every precaution is necessary. On Sunday and Monday, two cyclists had potentially deadly encounters within a couple blocks of each other, one Sunday morning on Fifth Avenue near St. Marks while riding near the yellow center line rather than in the nearby bike lane, the other on scarily narrow Sixth Avenue near Prospect Place. The Brooklyn Paper reports that in the first incident, a tour bus diverted onto Fifth Avenue because of the marathon swallowed up the 32-year-old cyclist's bike between its rear tires, though the cyclist was unharmed. The second cyclist wasn't so lucky... [http://thelmagazine.com]

Are you, like, the reincarnation of Jeffrey Dahmer and that guy in Europe who engaged in consensual cannibalism with his corpses?

These stories are horrible. I think non-cyclists would be equally appalled, these are just ghoulish stories that happen to involve a bicycle.

It's like the Babes on Bikes thread meets Saw.

Exactly. Accidents happen everywhere...whether on your bike or not. Pointless and disturbing thread!

While some may regard this as a morbid thread (reasonable view), I view this as an ongoing learning opportunity...

Not to make assumptions
Be careful
Allow for others: mistakes, carelessness, stupidity, egregious behaviour, vindictiveness
Be lucky
Be careful (yes again!)

My friends and I have been talking lately about the very noticable increase in aggressive motorist in our area. Lots of bad things have happened.

Today, on an open straight section of road, an oncoming car crossed the center divide and headed directly towards me. And then at the last second swirved back into their lane. One word for this; blatant.

Turns out that the truck driver that killed a woman here about a week ago on Alpine Road, Portola Valley CA. had already killed 2 other cyclist.

I decided a while ago that I would NOT encourage my kids to take up cycling. I'm on the road 3 to 6 days a week and knowing what's out there would drive me nuts if my kids took up the sport.

I did not have this view just a couple of years ago. Perhaps a different story of we lived in a calmer area.

Here's a link to the latest news on the Alpine Road accident in Portola Valley, California. The driver has a history of accidents, including fatal ones, and including some that were clearly not his fault. Just an crash magnet it seems.

http://www.mercurynews.com/peninsula/ci_16632513?nclick_check=1

The article isn't clear but having ridden through this area many times, what seems to have happened is this: the truck was in the far right lane which is a right-turn only lane going to the freeway, the cyclist was in the next lane over the left (the right-most lane that goes straight) intending to go straight through. Somehow the cyclist came in contact with the left side of the truck, whether the truck decided not to get on the freeway and veered one lane over to the left, or whether the cyclist had a mechanical or something that caused her to move right is, I suppose, the subject of the lawsuit.

I can't say I've experience more aggressive driving around the area because there have always been a few of those types, but I did have an encounter recently where a motorist passed me on a downhill road (Kings Mountain in Woodside, CA) by gunning it way above the speed limit and passing with the window rolled down while yelling something I couldn't make out.

Bikes can easily keep up with the 30mph speed limit on this road and the occasional 20mph curve. So, cyclists routinely take the lane and trundle down the road in line with cars in one happy train. But you get the few motorists who just believe it is their right to be in front of you. So, this car speeds around me and of course, I'm on his tail the rest of the way down because he really can't go any faster than I was going.

At the bottom of the hill, I catch up with him at an intersection and we have a discussion. Turns out they were basically nice folks who are frustrated with the bike traffic, and a little misinformed about the vehicle code. We had what I hope was a useful discussion, but they did mention that there are regular meetings of homeowners who want to petition the city to pass an ordinance forbidding bikes on the roads in this area. So that mentality is out there.

The twisted frame of a bicycle lies on Lake Shore Boulevard after its rider was killed in a collision with a TTC streetcar.

"[The streetcar is] a large vehicle that doesn't have the capacity to stop in a short distance — by the sheer size of it — and there's not too much [the driver] can do. It's on fixed rails" said police Const. Hugh Smith.
Smith called the collision “completely preventable” the streetcar may have missed traffic signal.

This is the latest setback and comes on top of increased focus on traffic safety in the city over the past few days, after a rash of deadly accidents involving cyclist and pedestrians of late. Here the discussion [http://ibiketoronto.ca/forum]

Cyclist killed by a 20y-old distracted miss

Friday, December 03, 2010 | With plastic grocery bags hanging from his bicycle handlebars like tassels as he rode down the street, James Sawicki lost his life in the neighborhood after being struck by a distracted driver a 20-year-old Rochester Hills woman. Sawicki was a familiar face to people in the 18 Mile Road corridor of Sterling Heights. Police Lt. Dale Dwojakowski said. “He’s been around this city for years. The driver looked down at the floor for just a few seconds and didn’t see him in time when she returned her attention to the road,”[dailytrib.com]

Do you people get off on this kind of thing?

Cyclingnews has truely become a horrible piece of cr*p.

Good bye.
But you are the Editor in Chief? Whatever that means.

Honestly, I read some of these stories and I want to stop riding my bike. This is horrible. I wish there was better ways to minimize our risks to accidents besides us cycling defensively

1. I understand that in the Nederlands, the cyclist is given "priority" in that: in event of a collision (or incident) between a cyclist and motorist, the motorist be be presumed to be at fault.

This formula shifts the burden of proof entirely to the non-cyclist. Such a situation will not prevent people from: being drunk, falling asleep, becoming enraged... however I believe it would result in giving "road users" pause.

My guess it would also operate sub-consciously to temper the actions of all.

Perhaps we could push our respective legislatures to consider the above.

2. IIRC, Dutch motorists are preternaturally aware of cyclists and the resulting positive outcome is a benefit to all road users.:)

My apologies as I do not have references to either 1 or 2.
Dutch friend of mine commented that "there's no such thing as Dutch motorists, just cyclists temporarily behind the wheel"
