Man Dies While Cycling Across Country for Oil Spill Victims

Roger Grooters was killed on his bike ride around nine o’clock Wednesday morning in Bay County, Florida.
“He was such a loving guy, he had a twinkle in his eye and his smile was so warm. He died for a noble cause and in a terribly tragic way.”
His noble cause is one we can all relate to. His plan was to cycle from Oceanside, California to Jacksonville, Florida raising awareness for victims of the oil spill along the way. His last post on his blog was made on Tuesday, showing pictures of his ride through Destin. Posted by his son just hours after his passing:
“I love you so much dad. You will always be in my heart. Your son, Josh.”
He says the most disturbing part is how close he was to the finish line.
Of the 32-hundred miles he only had less than 300 to go.

Cyclist Derek Allen Killed in a run down with Muni Bus

The San Francisco Medical Examiner's office moments ago identified the man killed yesterday by a 44-O'Shaughnessy bus: Derek Allen, just 22 years old.

A high-ranking Strathclyde Police officer has died in a cycling accident near Glasgow. Supt Neil McCover, 55, suffered fatal injuries when his bike was in collision with a car on the B764, near the Whitelee wind farm at Eaglesham, on Friday. He died at the scene.
He had been cycling with colleagues in his lunch break.
Strathclyde Chief Constable Stephen House said Supt McCover was a "popular, valued and highly respected officer".
He lived in Kirkintilloch and leaves behind a wife named Margaret and a 22-year-old daughter named Lauren.
"Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time."

Woman racing cyclist Alice Knight killed in the middle of the Midmar Dam Road Race
A cyclist was killed when she was hit by a car while competing in the Time Freight Midmar Notts Road Race. “The racer was entering the Midmar Dam venue for the final stretch of the race to the finish when she was knocked off her bike,”
“It is believed that a Toyota Avanza cut in front of the cyclist on the R103 at the entrance to the dam, knocking the woman with extensive force.”
Her injuries were severe and she was declared dead at the scene, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.
Members of the Burg Wheelers Cycling Club, who organised the event, were not prepared to speak to the media, saying they needed to consult Knight’s next of kin before making a statement. [http://www.witness.co.za]

Police said the truck entered the expressway from the South Rd entrance ramp seconds before the collision.

Angerer tells The Monroe Evening News that Anthony Stemen of Newport was riding an adult three-wheeled bicycle about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, when he was hit from behind by a speeding white Chevrolet Ventura that fled. Angeler says the driver of the white minivan they believe was responsible in this hit-and-run accident fatally striking the 51-year-old bicyclist in Monroe is taken into custody early morning. The victim, Mr. Stemen, was pronounced dead at Mercy Memorial Hospital. Angerer said Mr. Stemen had a prosthetic leg from injuries he suffered in a previous accident some years ago. [monroe.com]

Emergency Cop runs down and kills teen with his cruiser
10/19/2010 12:34 PM | Rochester Police have identified the teen as 14-year-old Trayvone Pritchett of Rochester that was killed by one of their own. Family members say Pritchett was an eighth grader at John Marshall High School. A Police cruiser was headed northbound on North Clinton Avenue as the car approached the intersection of Hoeltzer Street, the teen bicyclist traveling westbound on to North Clinton Avenue from Hoeltzer Street, rode into the patrol car’s path.
Pritchett's sister, Shantaye Pritchette said, "He was taking his mom an anniversary card and birthday card. He didn't know it was going to end like this. This is a busy street, how can you be going that fast?"
Witness Pittman said the cruiser swerved around the northbound bus into oncoming traffic and struck the teenager. She recalled the force of the collision sending the teenager through the air and onto a parked SUV.

“I do all kinds of riding in the morning,” said Armando Huerta, a 27-year veteran cyclist and manager at Bicycle World, 2025 W. Nolana, McAllen. “We are lit up like Christmas trees.” Huerta said the fatal wreck “puts that thought at the back of my head, ‘Should I do this anymore?”
Cyclists interviewed Thursday said they regularly encounter honks from passing motorists and often have to fight for right-of-way along the bike lanes of area roads — regularly used as right-turn lanes by drivers. However, state law stipulates vehicles cannot occupy a bike lane if a cyclist is present.

What's most astounding is that the parents of the girl didn't seek to have the part of the case against them dismissed, only the one against the girl. The judge allowed it anyway.

October 28 2010 | MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Hennepin County medical examiner's office identified the bicyclist, Berry was struck and killed by a delivery truck Monday afternoon, about a block from Target Center.
According to the Star Tribune, police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Garcia says the bike had been stolen a couple of hours earlier. Garcia says at the time he was hit, Berry had a backpack that contained bolt cutters. [http://wday.com]
