Which when Liggett said it I looked the rider up and thought that strange he would say but to each his own. In fact during that stage/race I believe that is my only memory of ever seeing this mysterious Spanish man.

Gutiérrez would be far too prominent I'd say, of other possibilities in that era Iriarte is Basque (ish, he's from Zizur Mayor which is in Navarra but he has Basque lineage). Francisco Pérez?
