Incidentally, does anyone know why he is universally known by his maternal surname, rather than as Federico Martín?
His name in the register of baptisms is actually Alejandro Martín Bahamontes, but he was then given his uncle's name of Federico at the insistence of same and then dropped the Alejandro.

There are a few cases with people with common surnames where you either refer to them by their full name always (Joaquím Rodríguez, Samuel Sánchez as examples) or both surnames are always used (Julián Sánchez Pimienta, David García da Peña). Bahamontes grew up in an area where Martín was a very common surname so he used his mother's name as a means to stand out because it was a much more unusual name. Or so he himself says, you can sometimes not be sure with Bahamontes, he's prone to self-aggrandisement and to spinning a good yarn from time to time.
