No camera time and he would have invisibly finished high enough to keep his GC place.

Exactly! He is a masterful ninja that has perfected his craft of the anonymous over many years of diligent study. He will disappear now only to show up again on the 21st stage where we will suddenly realize he's already been back in the top 10 for over half the race.
