It'd be pretty odd to see 2 rainbow jerseys or 2 yellow jerseys in the peloton.

Two riders wore the Italian Champions jersey in the Giro before but that wasn't because of a tie. It was over a dispute as to who was the champion and the controversy almost caused to race to be abandoned.

with the help of a friend, she found this from the 1999 USAC rulebook

1O4 Dead Heats (c). "In road races, should two or more riders make a dead heat for first place only, they shall reride the final sprint for 1,000 meters on road bicycles to determine the winner. If the dead heat is for any other place, the riders concerned shall be declared equal and the prizes for those places shall be added and equally divided or duplicated at the discretion of the organizer."

The UCI rule was very similar.

So at least for the period this rule was in effect there should not have been ties for first place. there are other rules about splitting ties in stage races, MTB, CX etc.

The penalty shot of cycling! :)

That would be both fun and dramatic to witness, especially if a legendary title were on the line (so to speak). Can you imagine such a site at the velodrome in Roubaix?

It's fun to contemplate. I do wonder what would the procedure would be in the absence of awarding a tie. Especially for something like the World Championship.

Here was another close one. Tyler Hamilton for the win (just barely) over Blake Caldwell in the 2008 U.S. Pro Road Race Championships.

It ain't going to happen. If, beyond any reasonable doubt, & after all possible scenarios have been discussed; the highest ranked rider will get the benefit of the doubt:cool:

Highest UCI ranking? There'd be no other rank in WC road races and 1st stages.
