Riding in a bunch with a load of other 60kg dudes is a different sport to riding in a bunch with Stannard's* elbow in your face and a load of 'giants' barging their way to the front at 55kmh

I dont know why but the tiny climbers seem to suit bigger gears - look at Pozzavivo and Rujano (or Pantani, even allowing for Clinic reasons) - they all ride at a lower cadence than the bigger GC guys. Ive just lost a stack of weight (and power) due to illness and turning a bigger gear now seems relatively easier - and this is not because my W/kg has improved because it hasnt.

Maybe someone with an understanding of the biomechanics of it could explain?

Wiggins gearing on Angliru did look like a cockup. I wonder if marginal gains now extend to ovoid chainrings with a 110BCD?

henao over the years grew a lot in weight and started to ride very heavy in climbs. it's a known fact that when you ride heavy gears you have more chance of really blowing in a climb compared to lighter gears,

From what i've seen wednesday and friday. I conclude that Sergio is the type of rider that clamps on to the best climbers as long as he can, but if he blows, he blows tremendously.

Today again he was with the best 6/7 and when he was off dropped back to what, 13/14th?
Same wednesday.

He should learn to control his pace up a climb

I belive i can be a good experience for a younger rider that does not have what it takes to win yet, to atleast try to follow the best as long as possible. Even if he blows up, so what you know.

I think he is OK. It is his first GT after all. He still does not know how to measure his strength. He'll be fine, I hope.

A young Evans blew up near the end of a Giro while wearing the leader's jersey eventually dropping out of the top ten in the gc if my memory serves me. Henao has a bright future.

henao's future looks very bright considering he was really great in steep climbs at a younger age but the "botero" style gave him a lot but also ruined stuff like this. the tour climbs suit him better though. but sky for sure will work on his weight and gearing.

henao doesn't have bad days. he's incredubly consistant but he can blow on steep climbs. pampeago will/can be same thing. for the future I see it more positive though. they are working on his weight and hopefully also his heavy gears

Well, he indeed blew on a steep climb.

Stelvio should suit him better I guess, not so steep as Alpe di Pampeago, longer, high altitude. Looking forward to the Colombian's today!

I doubt he will do the vuelta? He will be allowed back to colombia for a while I guess though. Same for Uran who might return and not come back until beginning of the tour if he will ride it.

Yep he's done about as well as anyone should have hoped. Expecting him to stay right with the big boys for 3 weeks would be expecting way too much at this point. All season long he's been, unsurprisingly, just a few percent off being an actual challenger; but it's great that he's been among the challengers, and has been consistently.
