Carols said:Based on his past racing against them he didn't think they were real threats IMO...but his own weakness, Puritos growth as a GT rider and Valverde's maintaining his form for 3 weeks were things he didn't expect. All IMO of course.

RedFury said:With all due respect, I think the answer is not that complicated: under (his) current circumstances, he did the best he could. Fortunately -- for him and his fans, myself included -- it was enough for the win. Fuente de shall not be easily forgotten.
That said, I doubt you'll find him racing again against these two on the same kind of parcours, nor will he be coming back from such a long layoff. Now, not taking any credit away from Purito nor Valverde -- they were both exceptional and a huge reason why we had one of the best GTs in years -- but reverse those two factors as you normally would, and Alberto would prove time and again that he is the better of the three. Heck, he just did...in "their" Vuelta.
Only time will tell if we've already seen the best of Contador...or if his peak is yet to come. Bet that's a scary thought for some of his "haters"...never mind his cycling foes.![]()

Guys like Van Garderen, Pinot, Quintana, Dombrowski or Talansky are enough arguments to think in a complicated future for Alberto. With 22 or 23 years are better than this leaders, doing amazing things, incredible performances. Strongs time triallists, superclimbers... .Thibaut Pinot, one of the younger guys of the history who gets the victory in the TDF. Nairo Quintana, stronger than Valverde in some mountain stages with only 22 years. Dombrowski, the way he won the Giro Bio this year and his results in his first season as pro demonstrate we are before a supertalent. Tejay maybe will be the best Gt rider time triallist of the peloton, also is improving in the high mountain. Talansky the same. The colombians, agressive style riders, Fabio Aru, the best italian climber talent since Simoni. Kelderman, his ITT in Dauphiné was insane, also he finished in a high top in the GC. Hes only 20 years. And more for come.

Carols said:Yes the youngsters are Coming no doubt....but I think he's got at least 3-4 years before he fades and they peak. We shall see.
airstream said:the main trap is so-called contador's level is not something absolute and unshakeable. froome, wiggins [now matter how much you ignore it] and schleck are already on this level. one may get stronger, others may get weaker. all that сan cause quite deep resonance. it's very unpredictable.

Carols said:Well personally I think he will come Storming back...I selected 5 more GTs. This one was tough and we got Fuentes De; showing the man's Talent, Class, Heart, Iron Will and race savvy. That ride will live on long after I'm gone...
When you can beat them when you aren't at your best (Giro 2008, Vuelta 2012) on their parcours it speaks Volumes.
But I do think he dismissed Purito and was only focused on Froome until Froome was fading; then the 3 high mountain stages showed him his true rivals. And he handled them with a Courageous, Daring, resourceful solution!
He will only get better from this victoryBeware peloton, Beware...the 2011 Giro Alberto is still in there!

Froome19 said:Spot on and that was why I would not put Contador odds on for the Tour next year.
The fact is that Schleck is close to his climbing level if not on it. Contador has always had the edge because of his TT, but that is not assured at all. Froome is also very close to his climbing level and may even be equal to or above Contador, we dont really know and will only find out at next year's Tour for sure. Wiggins as well is looking good and though Contador is probably stronger he is not someone to be under estimanted, because he climbed as good as anyone bar Froome in the Tour and can put 1 min into Contador per TT easily. Then there are the up and coming riders to consider such as Quintana, Pinot, TJVG, Dombro if anyone of them, and others indeed as well such as Rolland, become really really good then Contador will also have a hard time winning.
Then there is the fact that we have yet to see Contador at his Giro 2011 form, maybe he will never reach that pinacle? Maybe he will decline early.
