I saw this article on the main page of the site and saw that Contador mentioned staying off the bike completely for roughly 1.5 months.

Is there any consensus on how much time athletes should take to recover, both physically and mentally from their race seasons? Does it depend mostly on how much mileage or fitness the particular rider has? I realize that a rider of Contador's caliber would most likely not lose much of his muscular adaptations with such a break from training, but what does it mean for your average cyclist?
I usually like to take a couple of weeks off from training at some point in the fall, but have never really known if I've taken too much time off (or not enough). I usually get to the point where I just want to get back in the saddle, and that's when I figure my break has been long enough.
I'm curious to see what your thoughts are!
