"Doping is an unfortunate fact of life," the cycling legend wrote in It's Not About the Bike, a biography that topped the New York Times best-seller list in 2000. "Some teams and riders feel it's like nuclear weapons -- that they have to do it to stay competitive.

"I never felt that way, and certainly after chemo the idea of putting anything foreign in my body was especially repulsive."
